Blue whiting

Eluorescent lamps for showing plants use a blue-white phosphor blended with a deep red-emitting phosphor. This more closely corresponds to the action spectmm for plant growth because there is Htfle green in the spectmm, African violets, for example, have leaves which appear more purple in color. The deep red emitter which is commonly used is magnesium fluorogermanate activated by Mn. ... [Pg.291]

Chemical Properties. The valence states of chromium are +2, +3, and +6, the latter two being the most common. The +2 and +3 states are basic, whereas the +6 is acidic, forming ions of the type CrO (chromates) and (Cr203 [ (dichromates). The blue—white metal is refractory and very hard. [Pg.113]

CCT refers to the appearance of the light generated by a very hot (i.e., incandescent) object, the temperature of which is measured in kelvins (K). As a body is heated, it begins to produce a reddish-yellow, and then a yellow-white light. As temperature increases, the apparent color of the light changes to blue-white. In astronomy, for example, older, cooler... [Pg.713]

The high reflectivity, pleasing blue-white colour, and the oxidation- and tarnish-resistance of the metal are the main reasons for its application in the form of thin coatings to cheaper and less resistant metals, for decorative purposes. [Pg.545]

Some laundry detergents contain optical brighteners. These are fluorescent dyes that glow blue-white in ultraviolet light. The blue-white color makes yellowed fabrics appear white. [Pg.213]

Cadmium is a soft, blue-white metal that is malleable and ductile although it becomes brittle at about 80°C. It is also found as a grayish-white powder. It is considered rare and is seldom found by itself as an ore. Its melting point at 320.9°C is considered low. Its boiling point is 765°C, and its density is 8.65 g/cm. Certain alloys of cadmium have extremely low melting points at about 70°C. [Pg.144]

When lead, which is very soft, is freshly cut, it has shiny blue-white sheen, which soon oxidizes into its familiar gray color. Lead is extremely malleable and ductile and can be worked into a variety of shapes. It can be formed into sheets, pipes, buckshot, wires, and powder. Although lead is a poor conductor of electricity, its high density makes it an excellent shield for protection from radiation, including X-rays and gamma rays. [Pg.204]

Dilute IMMEDIATELY with 40 p, TE Buffer (10 mM Tris, pH 8.0,1 mM EDTA) and either transform IMMEDIATELY or freeze the reaction until you are ready to transform. coli with a transformation efficiency in excess of 1 x 10 are recommended and if the vector has been modified for blue-white screening ensure that an appropriate E. coli host strain is used 5 pi of the diluted reaction should give tens to hundreds of colonies per well of a 24-well plate. [Pg.28]

Pick colonies for plasmid miniprepping as usual (if blue-white screening is used then blue colonies should constitute <10% if the reactions were successful. (The blue colonies are derived from inefficiently linearized parental plasmid and should not be picked as they are non- recombinant ). Two colonies are normally sufficient to find a recombinant clone but more may be required. [Pg.28]
