Optical coating

Organic materials, such as polymers, paints, pigments and dyes, are used in everything from car parts to fine art. Polymers exposed to UV light can lose mechanical strength and integrity, while UV light causes [Pg.82]

Correlation between the body forces and the stress state in the head was investigated both by the strain gauge method and the optical coat work stress examination method, and the magnetic measurements were performed at the same time. [Pg.7]

During the optical coat work stress examination method the upper plate of the head of some of the bolts was covered with an optical coat work (Fig. 4). On the head of some other bolts strain gauges were stuck which measured the plain biaxial stress state in the middle of the top surface of the head of the bolt (3.5 x 3 mm). The magnetic probe detected average stresses up to 0.1 mm depth in an area of 14 mm diameter in the middle of the head of the bolt. [Pg.7]

The distribution of the main stresses during the optical coat work stress examination method is illustrated by a section of a stress state in Fig. 5. [Pg.7]

Ion plating is used to deposit hard coatings of compound materials, adherent metal coatings, optical coatings having high densities, and conformal coatings on complex surfaces. [Pg.522]

Glaze coatings (58) are appHed to dry or bisque-fired clay ceramics to form a strong, impermeable surface that is aesthetically pleasing. Protective ceramic coatings can also be deposited by CVD (68,90). Plasma activated CVD has been used extensively to produce diamond and diamondlike films. Diamond films can also be used to make optical coatings with a tailored refractive index. [Pg.313]

Optical Coatings. Thin surface coatings are appHed to optical components to improve performance. Wideband antireflection coatings for the visible and ir regions need materials with a refractive iadex of for the best efficieacy. Cerium fluoride, a stable material resistant to humidity damage, has a suitable iadex, 1.63 ia the visible, 1.59 ia the iafrared, and is transparent over the range 0.5 p.m to 5 p.m. It is one of the compounds used to build up the multilayers deposited on lenses, sensors, and the like. [Pg.370]

Ellipsometry can be sensitive to layers of matter only one atom thick. For example, oxidation of freshly cleaved single-crystal graphite can be monitored from the first monolayer and up. The best thicknesses for the ellipsometric study of thin films are between about 1 nm and 1000 nm. Although the spectra become complicated, films thicker than even 1 pm can be studied. Flat planar materials are optimum, but surface and interfacial roughness can be quantitatively determined if the roughness scale is smaller than about 100 nm. Thus ellipsometry is ideal for the investigation of interfacial surfaces in optical coatings and semiconductor struc-... [Pg.402]

Three common uses of RBS analysis exist quantitative depth profiling, areal concentration measurements (atoms/cm ), and crystal quality and impurity lattice site analysis. Its primary application is quantitative depth profiling of semiconductor thin films and multilayered structures. It is also used to measure contaminants and to study crystal structures, also primarily in semiconductor materials. Other applications include depth profilii of polymers, high-T superconductors, optical coatings, and catalyst particles. ... [Pg.477]

The major optical coating process remains evaporation. However, sputtering, solgel, and CVD are making inroads because of the better properties they provide.fi l At this time, it is not clear which coating process will prove best but CVD, because of the excellent bond and hardness of the deposited materials and the relatively moderate cost of the equipment, is a good candidate. [Pg.416]
