Sealing coat

The principal use of coal tar ia paviag is as a seal coat to bitumea paviag. Asphalt for paviag comes ia several forms deteroiiaed by the iateaded appHcatioa, ie, straight asphalts called asphalt cements (AC), asphalt emulsioas, cutback asphalts, and road oils. [Pg.320]

In the adhesives area, thermoplastic, fatty polyamides are used in hot-melt and heat-seal adhesives for leather, paper, plastic and metal. Blends of EDA- and DETA-based polyamides are suggested for use in metal can seam sealants with improved toughness (234) pressure sensitive adhesives have been formulated with DETA-based polyamides (235) and anionic and cationic suspensoid adhesives are used as heat-seal coatings in paper converting (236). PIP and certain PIP derivatives are used with EDA in some appHcations (237). [Pg.47]

In the past, the initial layers of coating (the sealing coat) were achieved by applying one or two coats of shellac. However, due to the variability between batches of this material, PVP-stabilized types of shellac or other polymeric materials, such as cellulose acetate phthalate (CAP) and poly(vinyl acetate phthalate) (PVAP), are now more popular. It should be appreciated that a fine balance must exist between minimizing the thickness of the sealing coat and providing an adequate moisture barrier. [Pg.324]

The coating is applied by traditional trade practices, namely, using rubber squeegees and paint rollers. The applied coating is cured by a mobile curing unit, which consists of a cart housing power supply for the UV lamp (see Figure 111)T If the concrete is porous, a seal coat should be applied (aqueous UV curable polyurethane dispersion (PUD) is recommended). [Pg.242]

In conjunction with the overlay construction, approximately 15 tons (13.6 tonnes) of the Sulphlex binder was used in a seal coat operation on Loop 1604 adjacent to the overlaid section ... [Pg.221]

Once the cores are compressed, one to three sealing coats may be applied by the process operator. The third coat was never required, however. All 19 batches were completed with two coats of shellac. The volume of shellac applied was always 350 mL for both steps, as required by the batch record, and the record further indicates that the temperature of the air directed into the coating pan was always set at 40°C. There is no record of the temperature being monitored, however. The shellacked cores were dried overnight at 35°C. The dryer temperature was tracked and automatically recorded no variablity was encountered when the temperature chart was reviewed. [Pg.90]

The application process is also dependent on the type of project. Asphalt-rubber used as a seal coat is sprayed on the surface with equipment designed for asphalt-rubber s high viscosity and need for constant stirring to suspend the rubber. Hot mix projects require little special equipment as the asphalt-rubber is premixed with the aggregate and applied in the same manner as a standard overlay (29). [Pg.45]

Crack and joint sealants Seal coats Interlayers... [Pg.47]

Crack and joint sealants are applied only on cracks and joints. Seal coats include hot asphalt-rubber sprayed on the surface followed by precoated aggregate. Interlayers are the application of seal coats followed by either a standard overlay or an asphaltic-rubber overlay. Asphalt-rubber, when blended with an aggregate hot mix at about 9 to 10 percent by weight, serves as a binder in the thin overlay applied to the road surface. The hot mix binder holds the greatest potential for using large quantities of scrap rubber because of the thickness and quantity of the overlay. [Pg.47]

Epoxy seal coating was first applied as test patches in industrial plants in 1953. In 1957 epoxy polymer concrete was first used as a wearing course in the repair of popouts and spalled areas on the surfaces of various bridge decks in California (ACI, 1993). [Pg.60]

It is a primary ingredient of pharmaceutical printing inks for monogramming capsules and tablets, and can be applied as a 40% w/v alcoholic solution. It has also been used to apply one or two sealing coats to tablet cores to protect them from moisture before being film- or sugar-coated. [Pg.649]
