Breeding heritability

The breed of the cow, generally, does not appear to affect its propensity to produce spontaneous milk (Chilliard, 1982). For example, Chazal and Chilliard (1987a) found no difference between Friesian and Montbeliarde cows in relation to spontaneous lipolysis. Bachman et al. (1988), however, found that the milk of Jerseys is more susceptible than that of Holsteins. There also appears to be some within-breed heritability of spontaneous milk production (Deeth and Fitz-Gerald, 1976 Jurczak, 1996). 

Within cattle breeds, there is genetic variation in terms of resistance to GIN infection and the heritability is great enough to enable successful selection for GIN resistance (Gasbarre and Miller, 2000). There s another important difference in the approach to heritability between biology and behavioral genetics. Biologists are usually interested in how well a trait will respond to selective breeding, while behavioral geneticists have been focused on how much of a trait is determined by genes.8... 

Until recently, heritable changes in organisms were solely those that arose from mutations. Researchers in the field took advantage of both spontaneous mutations and those produced by exposure of organisms to radioactive materials and other substances known to induce mutations. Selective breeding was then used to increase the population of desired mutants. It was not possible to produce custom-tailored changes in genes. 

The mutagenic action of various agents on higher plants has been extensively studied, particularly in regard to cereals and other crop species. The potential value in plant breeding of induced heritable variations (Tor-sell, 1954 Rapoport et aL 1966) and the availability of self-fertilizing species to determine mutation frequencies have made these studies feasible. 

Further information concerning heritability of traits of interest (e.g., mussels selected to be less affected or unaffected by toxic blooms, mussels with a specific commercial characteristic) is needed to assess the potential of breeding programmes. It is really only possible to undertake artificial selection for useful traits in mussels when there are large-scale hatchery facilities routinely available to carry out controlled crosses and to maintain mussel broodstock with clearly identified pedigrees based on DNA analysis. It is extremely unlikely that palms combining all these characters will be found by random selection. Many years of plant breeding will be needed to achieve the most favourable combinations of genetic characters, and this in turn is contingent upon identification of palms containing the desired features and demonstration of their heritability.
