These studies, although few, suggest that exposure to photochemical oxidants can influence fertility and fecundity in animals and that the genera] health of newborn animals is much more likely to be impaired by exposure to oxidants than that of their parents. Whether the changes observed in reproduction variables can be related to mutagenic actions of ozone, discussed earlier, remains to be determined. In any event, it seems logical that effects of low concentrations of ozone and other photochemical oxidants on reproduction must be indirect and may be mediated by endocrine or ozone-biologic reaction products.

Ultraviolet light has another biological action which has not yet been correlated with a particular photoproduct and whose mechanism, although very probably related to either dimer or hydrate formation in the pyrimidines, is still a matter of speculation. The investigations discussed above show a clear progression from the discovery of a mutagenic action of H in Drosophila, through the studies of alkylation reactions of H with DNA, to the experimental production of tumors in maianals, including humans.

Aziridine produces genetic damage in bacteria, insects and mammalian cells in culture, as well as dominant lethal effects in mice. Opening of the aziridine ring appears to be an important metabolic step in its mutagenic action.
