Brambles

Besides the medicinally used herbal mixtures, there arc also the so-called household teas which are preferred by people who are sensitive to coffee or who do not wish to drink a caffeine-containing beverage on a regular basis. Household teas are made up from drugs which, apart from small amounts of tannins, have only aroma substances and possibly also plant acids bramble leaves, raspberry leaves, hibiscus flowers, hips and haws, and apple skins arc frequent components of such teas [4]. [Pg.18]

An initial suggestion made by Ford Doolittle shows a jumble of interconnections between the lines of development, rather than simple branches in the phylogenetic tree. These interconnections resemble a mycelium and have almost nothing in common with the original model, except for the termini of the three kingdoms. In a review article in Science, Elizabeth Pennisi (2001) chose the colourful metaphor of a tangled bramble bush to describe the new model. [Pg.277]

In 1995, Bramble published a study on the prescription frequency of antidepressants by British child psychiatrists (Bramble, 1995). A brief postal questionnaire was circulated to 350 members of the British Royal College of Psychiatrists, Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Specialist Sections. There was a 71% response rate, and 85% of the 238 respondents had employed antidepressants, the most popular of these being amitriptyline and imipramine. Nearly one-third of the psychiatrists at that time used neuroagents occasionally, and the SSRIs were used only very rarely. The antidepressant medication was used for a wide range of child and adolescent disorders beyond those of depression and nocturnal enuresis. Approximately 20% of the prescriptions were given for ADHD (hyperkinetic disorder), conduct disorder, and a few cases of autistic disorder. Clomipramine was apparently given for OCD. On the basis of these 1994 data. Bramble concluded that British child psychiatrists tend to use antidepressant medication far less often than American psychiatrists. [Pg.748]

Nozaki et al. [23] characterised the production of (+)-mesifuran [2,5-di-methyl-4-methoxy-3(2H)-furanone], an important flavour compound in arctic bramble, but which also occurs in strawberry and pineapple. After lipase-catalysed (Candida antarctica) enantioface-differentiating hydrolysis of the enol acetate, the pure optically active (+)-mesifuran could be obtained. [Pg.491]

Deciduous fruit plants that lose their leaves each winter and become dormant include apple, pear, peach, prune, plum, cherry, apricot, fig, grape, bramble, and bush fruits. The deciduous nut crops include principally walnut, almond, pecan, pistachio, and hazelnut (filbert). Nearly 11 million tons (10 million metric tons) of fruit come from deciduous plants grown in 43 states in the United States. In 1998 in California alone, 8.9 million tons (8.1 metric tons) of fruits and nuts were harvested (Olds, 1998). Strawberry and pineapple, though not deciduous fruits, are included in this chapter because of triazine use on fruit crops. The major growing areas for the United States are shown in Table 17.1, and these same crops are grown in many countries throughout the world. [Pg.211]

Errors have their source in prejudice as well as in the want of knowledge and sound instructions. The true road must be very simple, since there is nothing more simple than the operations of Nature. But although traced by this same Nature, it is little frequented and even those who pass in it make it their jealous duty to conceal their steps with thorns and brambles. One walks there only, through the obscurity of fables and enigmas it is very difficult not to go astray, unless a guardian angel bears the torch before us. ... [Pg.26]

Acrolein has been identified in foods and food components such as raw cocoa beans, chocolate liquor, souring salted pork, fried potatoes and onions, raw and cooked turkey, and volatiles from cooked mackerel, white bread, raw chicken breast, ripe arctic bramble berries, heated animal fats and vegetable oils, and roasted coffee (Cantoni et al. 1969 EPA 1980, 1985 IARC 1985 Umano and Shibamoto 1987). Sufficient data are not available to establish the level of acrolein typically encountered in these foods. Trace levels of acrolein have been found in wine, whiskey, and lager beer (IARC 1985). Further information regarding the occurrence of acrolein in food and related products is provided by EPA (1980). [Pg.93]
