Brain related problems

Rare painless hematuria normal Hb level heavy exercise under extreme conditions may provoke gross hematuria and complications Pain crises, microvascular disruption of organs (spleen, liver, bone marrow, kidney, brain, and lung), gallstone, priapism, leg ulcers, anemia (Hb 7-10 g/dL) Painless hematuria and rare aseptic necrosis of bone vasoocclusive crises are less common and occur later in life other complications are ocular disease and pregnancy-related problems mild anemia (Hb 10-12 g/dL)... [Pg.385]

Sibutramine (Meridia), a weight-loss drug introduced in 1998, inhibits the reuptake of the brain chemicals norepinephrine, dopamine, and serotonin, but does not promote monoamine release like the amphetamines. Yet the drug has been linked to serious side effects, including rapid heart rate, increased blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, seizure, and mental impairments. In March 2002, Italy s Health Ministry announced that it was immediately withdrawing all sibutramine products from the market due to health-related problems. Also, Meridia was the subject of a class action lawsuit filed in the United States. [Pg.93]

Tired of blaming themselves for what they see as their own failure, parents are often eager to embrace the idea that there is some malfunction in the child s brain that puts the desired behavior outside of his or her control. If the cause of the behavior is biological, the child is physically unable to behave differently and the parents are not at fault. If the cause is psychological, on the other hand, this implies an emotional or relational problem, one for which parents might be considered partly responsible. [Pg.53]

Many seriously depressed persons have problems with cognition. The hippocampus is 10% smaller than in other depressed patients. Depression is associated with shrinkage of the part of the brain related to memory. People in late middle age who have experienced a major depression even once in the previous 10 years are twice as likely to develop problems in concentration, memory, or problem-solving ability after the age of 65, according to several large, epidemiological studies (Wang, 2007). [Pg.205]

Alzheimer s disease is the most common form of age-related dementia and one of the most serious health problems in the industrialized world. AD is an insidious and progressive neurodegenerative disorder that accounts for the vast majority of dementia and is characterized by global cognitive decline and the accumulation of P-amyloid deposits and neurofibrillary tangles in the brain. Family history is the second greatest risk factor for... [Pg.655]

Additionally, chronic drug use has been linked to neuropsychological problems that in turn make it harder to stop the cycle of abuse. Psychoactive drugs by definition affect the brain, and long-term or acute exposure to psychoactive substances can be toxic. Furthermore, we know that drug abuse can increase the risks of stroke, brain injury related to accidents, malnutrition, or liver damage, all of which can adversely affect brain function as well. [Pg.29]

Adolescence is a time of novelty seeking related to curiosity and learning skills for survival that maybe part of a natural maturation process. Adolescent brains are not fully mature, especially the frontal lobes, which have to do with problem... [Pg.38]

If I m having a bad day I sometimes still write, unless a reaction to a chemical is affecting my brain. When I can t think clearly, I can t write. And sometimes I feel so apathetic that I can t write. But I m thankful that I have the skill. I think education is so important to prevent others from getting this illness. I believe that chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, sick building syndrome and similar conditions with other names are all forms of MCS. They ll find that out with more studies. People just don t know what s wrong with them. They think they ve got asthma, depression, attention deficit disorder and a lot of other problems that can be related to chemical exposures. [Pg.204]

Let us consider next some of the factors which are known to influence mental health and how they are related to the problem of the etiology of mental disease and to the subject of brain metabolism. Mental ill health has in general remained a puzzle down through the centuries. To attribute it to demoniacal possession or to psychogenic causes leaves the question shrouded in mystery, and gives an unsatisfactory basis for developing therapeutic or prophylactic measures. [Pg.254]

Another problem in validating targets for behavioral disorders related to neurotransmitter abnormalities is the interplay between several neurotransmitter systems in specific brain regions. For example, in the hippocampus, limbic, and nigral-striatal areas, functions connected by serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine are interconnected so that blocking selected receptor subtypes or changing synaptic levels of certain neurotransmitters may... [Pg.228]

Brain sites that have an active D4DR are then part of the brain s dopamine-mediated system. A lower amount of dopamine causes this part of the brain s system to either shut down or be less than fully active, and in extreme cases results in Parkinson s and related diseases. Excess of dopamine may lead to schizophrenia. Some of the hallucinogenic drugs act to increase the amount of dopamine. Thus, there is a tight balance between good health and health problems. [Pg.345]
