The proofs of the more difficult mathematical results have been included in the appendices at the end of the book. These proofs are discussed qualitatively in the main text so that readers, who do not have the appropriate mathematical background, will have no difficulty in following the discussions and explanations. At the end of the book there are references to books, scientific papers, educational films and other information about soap films and bubbles. These references are numbered and some of them referred to by superscripts in the text. [Pg.10]

Chemists tend to be prolific authors. Some say they have a conceit of authorship, whereas others contend it is pride. Stacey was certainly proud of his many scientific papers (more than 350) and several books. In addition, he was founder-editor of three journals and he was a member of the editorial boards of several others. He was a supporter of Advances in Carbohydrate Chemistry from its inception. He served on the advisory board for many years, was associate editor, and contributed to early volumes. [Pg.5]

Joseph Sherma is John D. and Frances H. Larkin Professor Emeritus of Chemistry at Lafayette College, Easton, Pennsylvania. He is author or coauthor of over 500 scientific papers and editor or coeditor of over 50 books and manuals in the areas of analytical chemistry and chromatography. Dr. Sherma is coauthor, with Bernard Fried, Kreider Professor Emeritus of Biology at Eafayette College, of Thin Layer Chromatography (editions 1 to 4) and coeditor with Professor Pried of the Handbook of Thin Layer Chromatography (editions 1 to 3), both published by Marcel Dekker, Inc. He served for 23 yr as the editor for residues and trace elements of the Journal... [Pg.439]

Between them, Davies and Roberts have published over 400 scientific papers and a number of books. [Pg.232]

Jan C.J. Bart (PhD Structural Chemistry, University of Amsterdam) is a senior scientist with broad interest in materials characterisation, heterogeneous catalysis and product development who spent an industrial carrier in R D with Monsanto, Montedison and DSM Research in various countries. The author has held several teaching assignments and researched extensively in both academic and industrial areas he authored over 250 scientific papers, including chapters in books. Dr Bart has acted as a Ramsay Memorial Fellow at the... [Pg.830]

Newton, Isaac. A catalogue of the Portsmouth collection of books and papers written by or belonging to Sir Isaac Newton, the scientific portion of which has been presented by the Earl of Portsmouth to the University of Cambridge. This brief review can provide only a snapshot of the state of art. The older literature up to 1980 is covered by the still important review by Falbe [3]. A concise overview up to 2002 can be found in Cornils and Flerrmann [4]. Hy-droformylation with rhodium catalysts is covered by the book of van Leeuwen and Claver [5]. Ungvary reviews new developments in hydroformylation, mainly in scientific papers, every year [6-9]. [Pg.14]

The production of the nylon precursor e-caprolactam via the Beckmann rearrangement is one of the largest industrial processes worldwide. There are a large number of synthetic routes to e-caprolactam, most of which need to be improved because, without exception, all are multistage processes that produce large amounts of by-products, primarily ammonium sulfate. Due to its industrial application, the improvement of the Beckmann rearrangement of e-caprolactam was the aim of several smdies and a lot of scientific papers, patents and book chapters have been published on this topic during the last century. [Pg.471]

Historically, caffeine has played an important role in trade and politics and even now the export of coffee is an extremely important part of world trade for many countries. The health effects of caffeine have been the subject of numerous scientific inquiries, many scientific papers and conferences, and many books and articles. Perhaps the best book to combine both historical and health aspects of caffeine is The World of Caffeine - The Science and Culture of the World s Most Popular Drug by Bennett Alan Weinberg and Bonnie K. Bealer, published in 2001. This book gives a wonderful account of the interaction of caffeine and society from its ancient roots to present times, as well as a look at the health effects. A book devoted almost entirely to the health effects of caffeine is Caffeine and Health by Jack E. James, published in 1991. There is no lack of information on caffeine. [Pg.53]

The exterior of the Visser wormhole acts like a giant mirror. Light shining on it would bounce off as if it hit a reflecting material. Visser also proposed another mathematical model for a wormhole that resembles two coreless apples. The inner walls of the fruit are connected along the fourth dimension. You can read more about this structure in Halpern s Cosmic Wormhole book or in Visser s original scientific paper. [Pg.222]

Friedrich Hoffmann (1660-1742) as professor of medicine at Halle was influential in obtaining for Stahl his professorship in that university. His friendly relations with Stahl were, however, later disturbed by differences of opinion on scientific subjects. Hoffmann was a broadly trained scholar, a public-spirited and devoted officer of the university, a constant correspondent with eminent chemists of the time, and a member of several scientific societies. He was a widely known and highly respected physician, chemist and teacher, and published very many works and papers on medicine and chemistry. The latter were mainly on methods of analysis. Gmelin4 cites the titles of 122 books and papers pertaining to chemical analyses and descriptions of properties. Especially important were his treatises on mineral waters, and the salt contents of these, with methods for detecting the presence of the various constituents. He introduced the use of a mixture... [Pg.430]

The analysis of food carbohydrates by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) has been dealt with and reviewed by several authors, either as books or as chapters of books or as scientific papers, most notably in the current decade (1-6). [Pg.287]

The book The Use of LSD in Psychotherapy and Alcoholism, edited by H. A. Abramson (1967), contains the best collection of scientific papers on psychedelic therapy. [Pg.360]

Fritz Scholz is a Professor at the University of Greifswald, Germany. Following studies of chemistry at Humboldt University, Berlin, he obtained a Dr. rer. nat. and a Dr. sc. nat. (habil-itation) from that University. In 1987 and 1989, he worked with Alan Bond in Australia. His main interest is in electrochemistry and electroanalysis. He has published more than 300 scientific papers, and he is editor and coauthor of the book Electroanalytical Methods (Springer, 2002, 2005, 2010, and Russian Edition A BINOM, 2006), coauthor of the book Electro-... [Pg.663]

Scientific technical books are usually written not on his (her) own new idea or concepts but rather a collection of ideas and concepts written by others. Therefore, books unlike scientific paper are not expressing something new. And yet the book reviews are done by the people who do not hide behind the cloak of anonymity. If the book review can... [Pg.199]

Chang has spent his entire academic career at McGill, serving as assistant professor (1966-69), associate professor (1969-72), and full professor (1972-present). He has written more than 400 scientific papers and 21 books and is currently editor in chief of the international journal Artificial Cells, Blood Substitutes Biotechnology. In 1991, Chang was made an Officer of the Order of Canada, an award recognizing important contributions to the nation and the world. [Pg.63]
