The majority of glomus cells in the slices showed no secretory activity at rest, or less than one event per minute. However, some cells were spontaneously more active, with a secretion rate of about 10 or more spikes per minute. Although we have not studied the causes of this secretion in detail, it could be that these are cells damaged by mechanical contact with the carbon fiber that have acquired an unusually high intracellular [Ca ]. Another possibility is that these are electrically active cells, generating action potentials spontaneously, and therefore with high cytoplasmic [Ca ].

Neurotransmitters in the body are not normally made of radioactive atoms. Researchers make radioactive versions by adding radioactive atoms to the solution in which chemical reactions produce the molecule. For example, hydrogen-3 can be incorporated into parts of a dopamine molecule instead of hydrogen-1. Brain tissue can be cut into thin slices, exposed to radioactive dopamine (or other radioactive molecules), and then examined for radioactive traces, indicating receptors to which dopamine has attached. These procedures are known as autoradiography.

Thinly slice the apple and pear and for each person, arrange half of each type of fruit slices in fans on a platter with a half cup of grapes and a half ounce of cheese. Try this with a glass of full-bodied red... 

The distribution of the substance in the body is often studied with substances that have carbon-14 as a radioactive label in the molecule. The labeled substance must be specifically S3mthesized, but it allows a direct visualization of the distribution in the animal body. In a process called whole body radiography, thin slices of the dead deep-firozen animal are prepared and scanned for distribution of radioactivity. Images of the various two-dimensional slices are then combined to give a three-dimensional pic-tvire. In a parallel experiment, the target organs are isolated and extracted with solvents. The extracts are used to isolate and identify the metabohtes. 

This traditional reserve may have been compounded by the experience of the yellow rain controversy, in which the evidence, reports and testimony proferred in support of the Reagan administration s charges were subjected to a withering critique. Douglas Feith, then Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense, despaired of the critics who focused upon a thin slice of the total body of evidence and say that it does not prove the case , and who insisted upon standards of proof unrealistic even for scientific laboratories, let alone the international diplomatic community . He contended that these demands for absolute proof reflected The mentality that fears the effects on the arms control process of highlighting treaty violations more than it fears the harm caused by the violations themselves... 

Slice thickness is an important consideration in the younger child since, due to the small size of the body part that may need to be imaged, thin slices are desirable. However, to maintain a satisfactory SNR, imaging times may need to be increased. 

Schanel [295] prepared another biosensor for rapid determination of phenol concentration using thin slices from the fruit bodies of the fungus Agaricus bisporus and showed its function to be comparable with a biosensor based on a polyphenoloxidase. They tested slices from the fruit-bodies of some other wood-rotting fungi and found them unsuitable for the amperometric assay of phenols. 

In the early twentieth century, thousands of testicle transplants were carried out on men all over the world using thin slices of testicular tissue from monkeys. Although the human patients survived these operations, later research showed that the transplanted material had in fact been totally rejected by the hosts bodies.

In many fracture tests, a splitting method was employed. Figures 8 to 10 schematically indicate three of the arrangements used. In Fig. 8, a slice, h cm thick, is separated from the rest of the solid by pushing in a wedge which may be as thin as 0.01 cm but may also be more robust and have one of various shapes also the part broken off may be as thick as the remainder. In Fig. 9, a plate, 2h cm thick and w cm wide, is split in the middle to the depth c cm, and the force /required to extend the fissure is measured. Figure 10 shows peeling a ribbon, h cm thick, is peeled off the main body of an identical solid.
