The alkali metals also release their valence electrons when they dissolve in liquid ammonia, but the outcome is different. Instead of reducing the ammonia, the electrons occupy cavities formed by groups of NH3 molecules and give ink-blue metal-ammonia solutions (Fig. 14.14). These solutions of solvated electrons (and cations of the metal) are often used to reduce organic compounds. As the metal concentration is increased, the blue gives way to a metallic bronze, and the solutions begin to conduct electricity like liquid metals. [Pg.709]

In other white light devices, blue, green and red emitters are combined. Kido et al. [169, 170] designed multilayer systems using 6 (TPD) for blue, metal-chelate complexes for green and red emission, respectively. Similar devices have been developed by other groups, using Forster transfer or exciton confinement for the creation of the three primary colors [171, 172]. Exciplex emission was... [Pg.133]

Ordinarily, high temperature and ultraviolet radiation seem to promote the decomposition of metal-ammonia solutions. However there is evidence that these factors merely accelerate decomposition which was initially begun by catalytic amounts of contaminants on the walls of the containers. A silica tube was rinsed with liquid ammonia, the rinse-ammonia removed by evaporation, and the tube evacuated a concentrated blue metal-ammonia solution ( 1M) was prepared in the tube,... [Pg.137]

To a stirred mixture of 208 mg (1.00 mmol) of 86, 14 mg (0.02 mmol) of Pd(PPh3)2Cl2 and 7 mg (0.04 mmol) of Cul in a mixture of 5 mL of THF and 1 mL of triethylamine under nitrogen was added dropwise over 10 min a solution of 0.13 mL (1.10 mmol) of 85 in 5 mL of THF. The reaction mixture was stirred at room temperature for 6 h until the complete consumption of 86 (monitored by TLC or GC-MS). Then, a solution of 0.17 mL (2.00 mmol) of pyrrolidine in 5 mL of methanol was added and the mixture was heated at reflux for 6 h until the complete conversion of the intermediate alkyne (monitored by TLC or GC-MS). The solvents were evaporated in vacuo and the residue was chromatographed over a short pad of aluminum oxide, eluting with dichloromethane, to furnish after recrystallization from hexane-chloroform 200 mg (71 %) of the analytically pure enamine 87e as crystals with a blue metallic luster, m.p. 100-101 °C. [Pg.217]

Niobium, discovered in 1801 and formerly called colum-bium, was a special favorite. A soft, ductile, gray-blue metal, it is present in several minerals, forms a number of compounds and complexes, and is used to strengthen welded joints and certain steels. In 1941, scientists reported superconductivity in niobium nitride with a Tc around 16° K, fairly high compared to earlier superconductors. Progress slowed after that until 1953, when John Hulm, of the University of Chicago, put together a material... [Pg.31]

In order to check the paintability of parts molded with Q2-7119, test panels molded with and without silicone fluid were post-cured, solvent wiped with toluene, primed with PPG Durethane 600 Primer and then top coated with Durethane 300 blue metallic flake or white. Painted samples were exposed for 2 years in Florida Direct Black Box 5° South and then evaluated for appearance and adhesion. Results of these tests showed no difference between control and IMR-containing panels. Paint adhesion was excellent. [Pg.220]

Aldehydes or ketones containing a cyclopropyl group adjacent to the carbonyl group can be converted to ring-opened carbonyl compounds by several different types of two-electron reduction processes. The most widely used method employs lithium metal in liquid ammonia as the reductant. The cyclopropyl ketone is usually dissolved in anhydrous diethyl ether and added to the blue metal-ammonia solution. Occasionally, the order of addition is reversed, and the lithium is added to a solution of the ketone in ammonia and diethyl ether. After a timed interval, the reduction is quenched by adding solid ammonium chloride to give a mixture of alcohols and ketones. This mixture is generally oxidized before isolation, with chromium(VI) oxide/pyridine or with sodium dichromate/sulfuric acid, to solely afford the ketone. [Pg.2488]

Pr3Se4 is an intense blue metal [1]. Powders are dark blue [3, 4]. The X-ray L, absorption spectrum has a principal maximum at 5967 eV. The relative displacement to that of PrBg is -0.1 eV. It seems that the valence of Pr does not vary significantly, Vainshtein et al. [19]. [Pg.120]

Lead(II) sulphide crystallizes in a perfect NaCl structure with Pb-S distance 2 97 A, and is the only binary sulphide of lead. It is found in nature as large regular crystals of galena.
