Blood in stool

The nurse withholds the next dose and notifies the primary health care provider immediately if any gastric symptoms especially nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, evidence of bleeding (blood in stool, tarry stools), or abdominal pain occurs... 

Blood in stool indicates the possibility of inflammatory mucosal disease of the colon. Enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli (EHEC) is an important cause of bloody diarrhea in the United States. 

Most patients with colon cancer are asymptomatic early but may develop changes in bowel or eating habits, fatigue, abdominal pain, and blood in stool.

E. coli 0157 H7 (EHEC if blood in stool also test for Shiga toxin and refer isolates if toxin pos.)... 

NSAIDs and Gl ulceration and bleeding, renal Blood in stool, black stool, dyspepsia. 

Diverticulitis refers to the extension of mucosal pouches outv/ards from the external muscle v/all into the gastrointestinal tract. Diverticulitis is accompanied by colicky pain lasting for a fev/ days. The condition may be accompanied by constipation or diarrhoea and blood in stools. 

Assess for signs of bleeding, i ncluding bleeding at injection or surgical sites or from gums, blood in stool, ecchymosis, hematuria, and petechiae... 

Severe diarrhea with abdominal pain, fever, and mucus or blood in stools may indicate antibiotic-associated colitis... 

These include nausea, vomiting, gastric irritation and occult blood in stool. 

Characteristics < 4 stools/day blood in stools > 6 stools/day with blood in stools... 

The clinical symptoms of the disease are variable and depend upon the intensity of the infection. The presence of adult and larval parasites may give rise to abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and blood in stool. The migration of larvae leads to high fever, edema of face, eyelids, muscular pain in chest wall, cough, dyspnoea and stiffness of limbs. In severe cases, neurotoxic symptoms, myocardiasis, meningiHs and encephalitis may also be observed in some patients. 

The severity of ulcerative colitis may be assessed by factors such as stool frequency, presence of blood in stool, fever, pulse, hemoglobin, erythrocyte sedimentation rate, C-reactive protein, abdominal tenderness, and radiologic or endoscopic findings. The severity of Crohn s disease can be assessed by the Crohn s disease activity index, which includes stool frequency, presence of blood in stool, endoscopic appearance, and physician s global assessment.

ACUTE HEALTH RISKS nausea vomiting abdominal pain diarrhea blood in stool irritation of skin and eyes convulsions ventricular fibrillation cardiac arrest coma death. 

Because of hemorrhage risk, check hematocrit and test for blood in stool. Administer with caution to menstruating women, or patients with subacute bacterial endocarditis, severe hypotension, liver disease, or blood dyscrasias. Protamine sulfate inactivates heparin and can be used as an antagonist if severe bleeding occurs.
