Block Island

In conclusion, the main effects found for coadsorption are blocking, island formation, displacement by the component with higher heat of adsorption and site conversion. Attractive interactions may occur between the two adsorbates. Hence, the catalytic reactions can be discussed on the basis of the adsorption of the individual reactants in combination with the coadsorption effects mentioned above. 

Data on the concentration of hydrocarbons from gasoline contamination in media other than air, water, and soil are very limited. This is due, at least in part, to the difficulty in tracing the source of hydrocarbon contamination in other environmental media such as food, fish and shellfish, and terrestrial plants and animals. Samples of bivalve mollusks collected 2 days following an accidental spill of gasoline into Block Island Sound, Rhode Island, contained low levels of gasoline compounds (Dimock et al. 1980). However, there were no adequate control samples by which to confirm background levels of these compounds in the shellfish, so it is not certain that the contamination resulted from the spill.

Table I showed that carbohydrates are an important part of the dissolved organic matter in subsurface seawater. Sieburth et al. (1976) have measured the concentrations of mono- and polysaccharides in screen microlayer and subsurface seawater samples from Block Island Sound and the North Atlantic. It was claimed Popular Science, p. 26, Aug. 1976) that a 20 ft diameter, three blade, high-speed rotor designed by the National Research Council of Canada would develop 23,000 kWh over one year on Block Island, where the mean wind velocity is 18 mph, and the cost of electricity was 0.145 /kWh. If the initial cost of the unit was 10,000, estimate the break-even time in years. Assume the maintenance cost per year to be 1,000, and the salvage value to be zero.
