The elimination of an excessive dose of phenothiazines from plasma was analysed by using the novel polymeric solid-phase extraction (SPE) sorbent, strata-X-CW [191]. Strata X-CW was found to bind phenothiazines strongly, facilitating an intense organic wash and consequently allowing delivery of very clean extracts of these phenothiazines from biological matrixes. 

The sorbent materials most commonly used for the extraction of phthalate esters from water are C-18 and polymeric phases based on PS-DVB. Recently, a new polymeric phase. Oasis, has been applied for the concentration of phthalates, but the recoveries achieved with these polymers were lower than those obtained with C18. ° Nevertheless, this extracting phase was suitable for the extraction of phthalate metabolites from biological fluids. 

The last part of the book, Chapters 10—17, reports on different applications of polymers in the field of analytical chemistry sorption of organic compounds, Hke phenols, pesticides or caffeine, the use of polymeric materials for size-exclusion chromatography, for HPLC packing materials or as solid phase extraction sorbents. The examples cover a broad variety of chemical compounds, fike pesticides, pharmaceuticals, organic acids in different matrices, such as food, biological fluids, non-aqueous media, air and the use of hemosorbents in blood purification. 

Eurther improvements can be expected on each of the different steps of isolation, cleanup, chromatography, and detection systems for determination of VK in biological samples. TLC and direct-phase HPLC as chromatographic methods will be reduced to a minimum. Development of new materials for solid phase extraction (e.g., Oasis, a new polymeric SPE sorbent) and improved materials for reversed-phase HPLC, including smaller, narrow-bore or capillary columns, should bring advantage to RP-HPLC, especially in connection with MS detection, but also with fluorescence and electrochemical detection and help to obtain smaller sample volumes and/or shorter analysis times. However, the greatest advance, in our opinion, will be in the field of detection instruments—in particular, in mass selective detection instruments.
