The microwave distillation SPE apparatus is shown in Figure 9.12. A filet of catfish is placed in the microwave oven and heated, which drives the geosmin out of the tissue and is swept through the solid-phase extraction sorbent with argon gas. The condenser unit cools the gas, which increases the retention of geosmin, onto the 500 mg of C-18 in Figure 9.12. The sorbent is present in the bottom of the condenser unit. Charcoal, XAD-2, and C-18 were all tried for recovery of geosmin, and C-18 had the best recovery. [Pg.238]

In addition to electrophoresis-based collection of DNA in microchannels (see Section 7.7.3), adsorbents have been used to collect and purify DNA. In these cases, microchannels are generally used because of the small quantity of material requiring collection. Using solid phase extraction, sorbent particles of nano- and micro-silica and micro-sized octadecylsilica were immobilized using sol-gel chemistry to hU the microchannels of the microfluidic device [194]. DNA as well as several organic compoimds were evaluated for adsorption and desorption. They showed excellent adsorption, but poor recovery because they were difficult to extract. [Pg.150]

The last part of the book, Chapters 10—17, reports on different applications of polymers in the field of analytical chemistry sorption of organic compounds, Hke phenols, pesticides or caffeine, the use of polymeric materials for size-exclusion chromatography, for HPLC packing materials or as solid phase extraction sorbents. The examples cover a broad variety of chemical compounds, fike pesticides, pharmaceuticals, organic acids in different matrices, such as food, biological fluids, non-aqueous media, air and the use of hemosorbents in blood purification. [Pg.661]
