The first experienced sample of such type system is developed in department of biodynamic researches of clinic Mayo. It is referred to as Dynamic Spatial Reconstructor [16].

Livestock husbandry is not explicitly addressed in the historical concepts of organic farming. Livestock provided manure and was therefore an important link in the crop and soil fertility chain. Livestock played a major role on its own only in biodynamic farming, especially cattle whose organs are described as important catalysts of processes and transmitters of cosmic energies (Steiner, 1929). Nonetheless, even the pioneers of biodynamic farming did not consider livestock husbandry from an ethical or animal welfare point of view.

For a long time there has been private, in-house quality research, especially in the biodynamic sector and by some larger organic traders and processors. These vary from crystallisation techniques to broad screen residue analyses of raw materials. These in-house quality management schemes are not standard they depend on how seriously the companies take their responsibility towards their clients and/or want to avoid surprises by the food authorities. 

The Louis Bolk Instituut conducted an experiment to compare this modem cultivation system with biodynamic cultivation. The purpose of the experiment was further to develop organic standards and quality standards (Lammerts van Bueren and Hospers, 1991). Leaf lettuce of the same variety was sown on the same date in the two different growing situations. 

In both studies the apples were grown in the biodynamic orchard Boomgaard ter Linde in the south-western part of the Netherlands. We used full grown apple trees of the Dutch variety Elstar on dwarf rootstock M9,2460 trees/ha, grown on limey humus sea loam with trickle irrigation. The experiment was replicated four times.
