Screening broad

The antitumor activity displayed by the mitosanes and many synthetic aziridines stems from their ability to act as alkylating agents which chemically modify (crosslink) DNA. For this reason, a large number have been screened for antitumor activity, the mechanism of which has been the subject of considerable research effort <75CJC289l). An excellent account of the broad spectrum of biological properties of a multitude of compounds containing the aziridinyl moiety has been published [Pg.93]

A number of commercial expert systems have been applied to screen drug libraries. For instance, DEREK, TOPKAT, MultiCASE, and many other systems all have possibilities in this regard. However, it should be noted that for broad screening only compounds with toxicity associated with them can be identified, and hence these are very crude measures of hazard assessment. The use of expert systems to screen libraries is fraught with dangers, not least that no performance statistics are available for these systems being used for such an application. It is also highly probable that the vast majority of predic-... [Pg.475]

Benchmark 2 continues the emphasis on persistence, bioaccumulation, and toxicity, but at lower threshold values. In addition. Benchmark 2 includes flammability and explosiveness. It is anticipated that many chemicals will not move past Benchmark 2 because of the broad scope of hazards and challenging threshold values included in the Green Screen. [Pg.293]
