Every chemist needs to be a literature chemist to some extent. There is probably no argument about this until the extent is defined. Even if the laboratory chemist is to be helped by a technical librarian or professional literature chemist and maybe by a technical report writer and editor too, he needs to know what kinds of information the library can supply, and how long it takes to get various kinds of information. Nobody is likely to appreciate the kind and amount of work involved in preparing a bibliography on, say, chlorophyll, until he has put together some bibliographies himself. [Pg.27]

Two regularly issued Office of Technical Services publications serve as guides to the collection of reports the Bibliography of Technical Reports, which is now in its fourth year, fists the reports as they are received and abstracts most of them. Abstracts are grouped by subject matter—for example, under a main division entitled Chemicals and Allied Products are subdivisions such as detergents, plastics, and plasticizers, as may be appropriate to the reports appearing in a given issue. [Pg.71]

A subject index to each of the earlier volumes is available through the Office of Technical Services. The Special Libraries Association has published a Numerical Index to the Bibliography of Scientific and Industrial Reports, Volumes 1 to 10, which lists all the reports by PB number and sells for 10. The Technical Reports Newsletter enables business men and industrial firms to keep posted on new technical reports available from federal and nonconfidential sources. Each issue includes complete instructions on ordering OTS reports. The Newsletter may be purchased as part of the Bibliography. The subscription price which covers both services is 5 per year the Newsletter may be obtained separately at a cost of 50 cents a year. [Pg.71]

A large part of the PB collection, which consists of data seized by the Allies after World War II and declassified reports of government-sponsored research, is not indexed in standard chemical indexes. Much of the PB collection relates to the chemical industry, and often details of chemical manufacture are disclosed. The prime source for searching the reports is the index to the Bibliography of Technical Reports issued by the Office of Technical Services. Other indexes and search sources are listed in the bibliography and evaluated. [Pg.477]
