Bench-scale test

The proposed mechanism by which chlorinated dioxins and furans form has shifted from one of incomplete destmction of the waste to one of low temperature, downstream formation on fly ash particles (33). Two mechanisms are proposed, a de novo synthesis, in which PCDD and PCDF are formed from organic carbon sources and Cl in the presence of metal catalysts, and a more direct synthesis from chlorinated organic precursors, again involving heterogeneous catalysis. Bench-scale tests suggest that the optimum temperature for PCDD and PCDF formation in the presence of fly ash is roughly 300°C. [Pg.53]

Apparatus There are several variations of the bench-scale test leaf that may be used, but they all have features similar to the one discussed below. [Pg.1695]

Precoat Procedure Precoat filtration tests are run in exactly the same manner as bottom-feed tests except that the leaf must first be precoated with a bed of diatomaceous earth, perhte, or other shave-able inert sohds. Some trial and error is involved in selecting a grade of precoat material which will retain the filtered solids to be removed on the surface of the bed without any significant penetration. During this selection process, relatively thin precoat beds of I to 2 cm are satisfactory. After a grade has been selected, bench-scale tests should be... [Pg.1698]

The depth of cut involved in precoat filtration is a veiy important economic factor. There is some disagreement as to the method required to accurately predic t the minimum permissible depth of cut. Some investigators maintain that the depth of cut can be evaluated only in a quah-tative manner during bench-scale tests by judging whether the process solids remain on the surface of the precoat beck This being so, they indicate that it is necessaiy to run a continuous pilot-plant test to determine the minimum permissible depth of cut. The use of a continuous pilot-plant filter is a veiy desirable approach and will provide accurate information under a variety of operating conditions. [Pg.1698]

The best approach to evaluate the effectiveness of activated carbon adsorption is to run bench-scale tests on your waste stream. [Pg.468]

Aside from size considerations, the primary difference between bench-scale and pilot-scale work is that bench-scale tests are conducted in the laboratory pilot-scale testing is usually carried out on the site. Pilot tests are subject to a whole range of problems, such as siting, health and safety, obtaining clearances, installation and operation. However, the data obtained from pilot-scale tests are much more appropriate and useful because they reflect what is actually occurring in the field. [Pg.129]

Scale-up techniques for using the results of pilot plant or bench scale test w ork to establish the equivalent process results for a commercial or large scale plant mixing system design require careful specialized considerations and usually are best handled by the mixer manufacturer s specialist. The methods to accomplish scale-up will vary considerably, depending on whether the actual operation is one of blending, chemical reaction tvith product concentrations, gas dispersions, heat transfer, solids suspensions, or others. [Pg.312]

In the laboratory, more than 160 bench-scale tests involving more than 40 catalysts were made in order to determine the optimum catalysts and process conditions for this application. Initial tests used commercially available catalysts, but early findings indicated that a whole new series of catalysts was required. [Pg.57]

Pilot testing is intended to simulate the physical, biological, and chemical parameters of a full-scale process therefore, the treatment unit size and the volume of waste to be processed in pilot systems greatly increase over those of bench-scale testing. As such, pilot tests are intended to bridge the gap between bench-level analyses and full-scale operation, and are intended to more accurately simulate the performance of a selected full-scale process. [Pg.603]

A possible solution would be to use a bench scale test to eliminate the more hazardous composite but, depending on the outcome of current research, it may still be necessary to use the full scale hood test approach (Nordtest) to indicate safety. [Pg.515]

The start-up procedure after an agitation failure can be studied in detail in bench-scale testing as well. [Pg.135]

Several important parameters control aquifer bioremediation projects. These include hydraulic conductivity, soil structure and stratification, groundwater mineral content, groundwater pH, temperature, microbial presence, and bench-scale testing, as further discussed below. [Pg.279]

Pilot-scale treatability studies are enlargements of bench-scale tests, which more closely approach the full-scale project. The objective of pilot-scale tests is to verify treatability outside of a laboratory setting and verify the actual field conditions. Many pilot-scale studies are performed at the actual project site. Data from pilot-scale studies are used to design full-scale field operations. A pilot test may include the following ... [Pg.282]
