Sizing considerations

Aside from size considerations, the primary difference between bench-scale and pilot-scale work is that bench-scale tests are conducted in the laboratory pilot-scale testing is usually carried out on the site. Pilot tests are subject to a whole range of problems, such as siting, health and safety, obtaining clearances, installation and operation. However, the data obtained from pilot-scale tests are much more appropriate and useful because they reflect what is actually occurring in the field. [Pg.129]

A systematic approach to the crystal chemistry of borides is possible on the simple basis of atom size considerations, as well as the tendency of B to form covalent skeletons. [Pg.123]

Not only is it difficult to detect effects on male fertility because of group-size considerations, effects on male fertility mediated by decreased sperm production are also difficult to detect because of the normally huge excess of sperm included in a rat ejaculate. Sperm production can be decreased by up to 90% without effect on fertility (either pregnancy rate or litter size) in the rat. This is not the case for men, so the sperm excess in the rat represents a serious flaw in the rat model (see Working, 1988). To address this deficiency and improve the sensitivity of the model, it is advisable to determine the effects of the test agent on testes weights, testicular spermatid counts, and histopathology of the testes (preferably plastic sections) in the male fertility study and/or the 14-week toxicity study. In some cases, these parameters may be more predictive of possible effects on male fertility in humans than the fertility rate in rats. [Pg.278]

This can be achieved for a by considering two types of components differentiated almost exclusively by size considerations. The sublattice occupation can then be simplified. One possibility is to consider a as either A, where... [Pg.122]

Imagine a first-order reaction taking place in such a system under conditions where rk, i.e. VkjQ, is 10 and R is 5. Using the technique previously adopted in Sect. 5.1 and outlined in Appendix 2, we can readily calculate that this system would achieve 96.3% conversion of reactant. Under these conditions, the recycle reactor volume turns out to be 3.03 times that of an ideal PFR required for the same duty. This type of calculation allows Fig. 14 to be constructed this is similar in form to Fig. 12, but lines of constant for the tanks-in-series model have been replaced by lines of constant recycle ratio for the recycle model. From a size consideration alone, the choice of a PFR recycle reactor is not particularly... [Pg.258]

Generally speaking these sample size considerations are independent of any formal interim comparisons of the treatments, be they efficacy or futility. Given the need to maintain blinding it is also advisable not to involve the DMC in these re-evaluations their potential knowledge of the unfolding data in an unblinded way could well influence their view on a change in the sample size - they know too much ... [Pg.224]

AB2 structures. Fluorides and oxides of the formula AB2, which are distinctly ionic, crystallize in structures determined by size considerations. As in the case of AB structures, it is the coordination geometry of anions around the cation that determines the structural arrangement. The coordination may be 8-, 6-, or 4-fold, fixing the corresponding anion coordination numbers to 4,3 or 2. We thus have the following structures for ionic AB2 compounds fluorite (8 4), rutile (6 3) and silica (4 2) and these structures are shown in Fig. 1.7. [Pg.22]

Tanasawa (111) investigated burning droplets from a swirl spray nozzle in an essentially quiescent atmosphere. Again the results are limited and preclude broad application. At this point one may wonder, therefore, how the equations for vaporization rate can be utilized. The solution is to deal with some particular droplet size which is representative of the point of interest. Usually this will be a size considerably greater than average for the spray, when it has diminished to zero, substantially all of the spray will have vaporized. [Pg.110]

Similar to Jeffrey s hypothetical structure IV, structure H is a hexagonal crystal of space group P6/mmm. However, in contrast to structure IV, structure H comprises 435663 and 51268 cavities in addition to 512 cavities. On the basis of size considerations (including the relative size of the guests, the size of the cages in I-VII, and the unit cell parameters for sH), the structure was incompatible with Jeffrey s structures. Therefore, sH is not one of Jeffrey s (1984) known or hypothetical structures. Single crystal diffraction data for structure H have been obtained by Udachin et al. (1997b, 2002) and Kirchner et al. (2004). [Pg.65]
