If excessive noradrenergic transmission is a causal factor in anxiety, then it would be predicted that a lesion of central noradrenergic neurons would have an anti-anxiety effect in behavioural models of this condition. The use of animal models for depression has two main objectives. One is to provide a behavioural model that can be used to screen potential antidepressant treatments. For this, the behaviour does not have to be an animal analogue of depression all that is needed is for it to be consistently prevented by established antidepressant agents (i.e. no false negatives) but not by drugs which have no antidepressant effect in humans (i.e. no false positives). [Pg.429]

However, in some cases, there were unexplained differences between the observed trends in binding affinity and the trends in activity in mouse behavioural models. This may point to differences in efficacy among full agonists, partial agonists and antagonists/inverse agonists, or may reflect differences in in vivo metabolism or blood-brain barrier penetration or a combination of these factors. Abstract To better understand the coupling of thermal (T), hydraulic (H) and mechanical (M) processes (T-H-M processes) and their influence on the system behaviour, models allowing T-H-M coupling are developed. These models allow simulations in the near-field of the system. Such a model has been developed within the simulator RockFlow/RockMech. This paper concentrates on the thermal and hydraulic processes. For those processes, the material parameters and state variables are highly non-linear and mostly functions of temperature, saturation and pressure. This paper shows how these dependencies are formulated mathematically and are implemented into RockFlow/RockMech. The implementation allows phase changes between the fluid phases (gas and liquid) to occur explicitly. The model allows the simulation of very low permeability clays with high capillary pressures. An example for code validation is shown, where low permeability clay is desaturated, lastly, current work on the calculations performed in the near field study (BMTl) of the DECOY ALEX III project is outlined. [Pg.205]
