Ballestra et al. [32] described a radiochemical measurement for determination of "technetium in rain, river, and seawater, which involved reduction to technetium (IV), followed by iron hydroxide precipitation and oxidation to the heptavalent state. For homogeneous base catalyzed processes, reaction conditions are generally at ambient or slightly higher pressure, and a temperature of 65 °C-70 °C, in the presence of approximately 0.5% catalyst, with a 6 1 molar ratio of methanol to oil (Freedman et al, 1986). The process can be operated continuously (Noureddini et al, 1998) or in batch mode. Examples of continuous industrial processes include Ballestra, Connemann CD, and the Lurgi PSI process.

In recent years, soap manufacture by an alternate route, the saponification of fatty methyl esters, has been under development, most notably in Japan (Lion Corporation) and Italy (Ballestra). The fatty methyl esters are obtained from the methanolysis of triglycerides inorganic alkali, quaternary ammonium salts, and enzymes (lipase) have been used as catalysts for methanolysis in commercially practiced processes...
