Determining the location of a leak after assembly may be difficult - particularly if there is a large number of leaks. To minimize leaks in the assembled system, all joints and subsystem components should be helium leak checked during assembly. An efficient way of finding leaks is to leak check the subassemblies, assemble and leak check the simple system, and then add other subassemblies. As a final leak check, the system can be covered with a plastic bag and the bag filled with helium (bag check) to determine the cumulative effect of all leaks. 

As a baseline for system behavior a new system should be bag checked to determine its total leak rate. For example, a good production system may have a total leak rate of 10 Torr-liters/sec as fabricated.

This completely automated spectrum analysis procedure represents the final element in our effort to reduce to routine practice the quantitative analysis of similarly constituted gaseous samples by FTIR. Records are kept of when a sample was collected, the method of collection, who collected the sample, what the elapsed time was between harvest and freezing, the conditions under which it was stored, how it was shipped to the laboratory, and when it was shipped.
