Automotive instrument panels

Automotive (instrument panels and lighting systems), 25% glazing and sheet (windows), 20% optical media (eyeglasses), 15% appliances, 8% computer and business machines (CD and DVD disks), 7% medical, 7% recreation and safety, 7% miscellaneous, 11%... [Pg.309]

STYRENE-MALEIC ANHYDRIDE. A thermoplastic copolymer made by the copolymerization of styrene and maleic anhydride. Two types of polymers are available—impact-modified SMA terpolymer alloys (Cadon ) and SMA copolymers, with and without rubber impact modifiers (Dylark ). These products are distinguished by higher heat resistance than the parent styrenic and ABS families. The MA functionality also provides improved adhesion to glass fiber reinforcement systems. Recent developments include lerpolymer alloy systems with high-speed impact performance and low-temperature ductile fail characteristics required by automotive instrument panel usage. [Pg.1557]

Water-borne adhesives are preferred because of restrictions on the use of solvents, Low viscosity prepolymers are emulsified in water, followed by chain extension with water-soluble glycols or diamines, As cross-linker PMDI can be used. Water-borne polyurethane coatings are used for vacuum forming of PVC sheeting to ABS shells in automotive interior door panels, for the lamination of ABS/PVC film to treated polypropylene foam for use in automotive instrument panels, as metal primers for steering wheels, in flexible packaging lamination, as shoe sole adhesive, and as tie coats for polyurethane-coated fabrics. PMDI is also used as a binder for reconstituted wood products and as a foundiy core binder. [Pg.1655]

Major polymer applications electronics (computer and television housings, keyboard frames, interface boxes), automotive (instrument panels, interior and exterior trim, glove compartments, wheel covers, electric connectors, ftise boxes), air conditioner housings, hospital and office fiimiture, production of blends... [Pg.661]

Light stabilisers for automotive applications should preferably be nonfogging and nonblooming. HALS compoimds are widely used in automotive instrument panels to protect TPOs. Adeka Palmarole markets an Asahi Denka HALS stabiliser, ADKSTAB LA-502, for automotive polypropylene. It is claimed to have good compatibility, without being too easily extractable. BASF s Uvinul 3460 is claimed to have exceptionally low fogging performance (0.5 mg/m of instrument panel over 16 hours at 100-120 °C) combined with good UV protection. [Pg.141]

PPO is one of the most important engineering plastics first synthesized by Hay et al in 1959 by the oxidative polymerization of 2,6-dimethylphenol using copper(I) chloride/pyridine catalyst under oxygen (1 ). Poly(phenylene oxide) (PPO) is a thermoplastic, linear, noncrystalline polyether commercially produced by the oxidative polymerization of 2,6-dimethylphenol in the presence of a copper-amine catalyst. PPO has become one of the most important engineering plastics widely used for a broad range of applications due to its unique combination of mechanical properties, low moisture absorption, excellent electrical insulation property, dimension stability and inherent flame resistance. PPO finds applications in automotive instrument panels, internal decoration and exterior decoration parts. Typical applications include wheel... [Pg.5]

Grades of W type are produced which contain PC and AES. These grades exhibit good UV resistance, impact strength, and thermal stability. The materials are applied for exterior parts without painting, and also for the parts around automotive instrument panel requiring heat and UV resistance. [Pg.328]

The applications of PCs are extensive, emanating into all types of markets. A sample would include electronic connectors, switches, terminal blocks, computer disc packs, storage modules and housings, appliance power-tool housings, vacuum cleaner impellers, fan and air-conditioner grills, automotive instrument panels, indoor and outdoor lighting diffusers, medical kidney dialysers and blood oxygenators, and a host of others. [Pg.433]
