Calibration automated

Before starting the automated calibration, a number of the peak match parameters need to be set. These parameters determine the limits within which the acquired data must lie for the software to recognize the calibration masses and result in a successful calibration. Pulse techniques are semi-automated by nature the responses can be transmitted directly to a microcomputer for immediate analysis. Fast on-line analysis in flow systems with automated calibration is one of the great advantages, which will be much exploited in the future. 

The AFM scanners are calibrated by imaging a grating of defined spacings (Fig. 2.28a). Closed loop systems require only an occasional check of the calibration of the capacitive sensors open loop scanners, however, require, in particular for the x, y calibration, a regular (monthly) check and calibration. For a typical AFM system, the deviation should not exceed 5% otherwise a calibration is needed. Based on the images acquired on the gratings, automated calibration routines correct altered x, y, and z sensitivities, scanner bow effect (Fig. 2.28b), etc.

Additional examples of the use of mixing chamber to FIA are the first version of FIA titrations [10], where a mixing chamber was used to increase the width of the injected zone and to conform with the one-tank-in series model (see Section 4.10) the work of Tyson [1062, 1245], who used the mixing chamber for automated calibration in atomic absorption and Stewart [427], who applied a mixing chamber to automated dilution. 

Now to our subject. Modern software programs offer many options for the manipulation of the chromatogram, e.g. automated baseline subtraction, programmed change of integration parameter, auto-zero functions and auto scale, automated calibration for non-linear signal-to-concentration ratio, etc. It is worth while knowing these options and how to use them as they fit. 

Upon completion of the automated calibration runs the raw and calculated data is displayed on the Computer Screen. The operator is afforded the opportunity to immediately view and approve the test results. The completed cahbration data is stored on a dskette and then used to generate hard copy print-outs and plots of cmves. (Figure 2)... 

Finally in this section, it is worthwhile to emphasize again that careful mass calibration is an essential feature of validation of any analytical method. Automated calibration routines are convenient and easy to use, but should be checked before use. 

The latest model of Microscal s FMC incorporates the new Calorimetric Digital Output and Sequencer, CALDOS 3, which provides simple access to the output data from the instrument and any downstream devices employed with it. In addition, CALDOS 3 offers control of the fluid delivery devices, the valves which run the experiment, and automated calibration facilities for both flow and for static studies.

In the case of instrument calibration, automated calibration data provides a wealth of diagnostic information on the overall health of the instrument. Analysis of the calibration information can uncover alignment problem, detect optical contamination or thermal problems, and more.

Agilent Technologies and Infometrix have developed a technique called Automated Calibration Transfer (ACT) that allows users to transfer e-nose applications from one instrument to another simply by running a few calibration samples. Running ACT also adjusts for long-term sensor drift and for tune-induced shifts. In brief, ACT improves the stability and reliability of the MS sensor.
