Standardization of a Titrant For wet chemistry analytical methods, a titration is often used and the titrant, or the solution to which an unknown sample is compared, must be standardized. This can be done by comparing it with another standard. The important thing here is that the standard with which it is compared is ultimately traced to a SRM. The procedure utilizes volumetric glassware heavily, and thus the analyst must be assured that these are properly calibrated, as discussed above. Auto-titrators can be used (Figure 5.4). In this case, the automated equipment can be calibrated against manual equipment, i.e., volume readings obtained with the auto-titrator must match the volume readings obtained with a calibrated buret for the same sample. SEC is measured with a conductivity meter, which normally consists of an AC bridge and a conductivity cell or electrodes. The conductance is measured between two electrodes. In an effort to reduce emissions from mobile sources to help address acute ozone nonattainment problems, the State of California adopted a Low Emission Vehicle/Clean Fuel program in 1990. Low Emission Vehicles, or LEVs, are designed to meet significantly stricter HC, CO and NOx standards than vehicles sold in the remainder of the U.S., and are designed to operate on a strictly controlled reformulated fuel to achieve low emissions over the vehicle s lifetime. One of the characteristics of this fuel is a low sulfur content, which averages 30-40 ppm or less. Consideration of the analyses performed on the 8-channel and both models of the 12-channel Technicon equipment in relation to the earlier discussion means that these latest developments in the field of Auto-Analyzer instrumentation demand standardized sera for calibration purposes. In fact, the successful operation of the SMA-12 instrument is entirely dependent upon the careful analysis and subsequent stability of the standardizing serum, since this is used both for the initial calibration of the various analytical channels and for the subsequent monitoring for drift and application of any correction needed as a result of instrumental drift.
