The cross-national prescribing database using the same methodology provided a useful and valid comparison of patterns of prescribing psychotropic medications in mental health services in Australia, Thailand, and Malaysia (Ng et al, submitted). The study was carried out in three outpatient mental health centres in North Western Mental Health (NWMH) in Melbourne (September to November 2002), Prince of Songkla University Hospital in Hat Yai (January to March 2003), and Hospital Kuala Lumpur (January to March 2003). The proportions of outpatients treated with a primary diagnosis of a psychotic illness were 91%, 41%, and 75% in the Australian, Thai, and Malaysian samples respectively. Considering psychotropic prescriptions in schizophrenia alone, the majority of patients were prescribed antipsychotics Australia (93.7%), Thailand (92.9%), and Malaysia (97.7%). [Pg.137]

Approximately 11000 cancer patients with various kinds of tumors have been treated with electrochemical therapy (ECT). This immense task was accomplished by training 2300 medical doctors through more than 150 ECT training courses between 1987-2001. There have been more than 1300 hospital and clinics in China offering ECT treatment over the past fifteen years. Although most of the treated patients were Chinese, a number of them also came from Europe, Australia, U.S.A., and Japan. [Pg.506]

The question of distance is important legally in deciding whether to specify distances between odour sources and housing, hospitals, schools etc. The rules operated in Germany, the Netherlands and Australia are of great interest and it may be significant that Australia, which has much more space and lower concentrations of humans than Europe, allows larger distances between source and human nose than does Europe. [Pg.28]

Furthermore, Australia has a strong framework in place to support the ethical conduct of clinical trials, provided by the NHMRC, its principal committees and HRECs. In June 2003, there were 226 registered HRECs in Australia - 125 hospital (public and private), 53 imiversity, 23 government and 25 associated with professional and other bodies. [Pg.678]

Many patients (67% in one recent survey) in Australia take herbal remedies. Most do not declare these if they are admitted to hospital. The recent story of one herbal preparation reinforces the need to look carefully at possible interactions between preparations from the pharmaceutical and herbal industries. [Pg.153]

This abuse is not unique to the United States, either. In late 2001, an investigation was launched into the birthing unit staff at Australia s Wollongong Hospital. Fenitrothion is a broad-spectrum insecticide effective against a number of insects. It has been widely used in Australia for locust control. In January 2002, nine workers were hospitalized in Melbourne, Australia, as the result of exposure to fenitrothion.8 The incident occured when a forklift ran over and punctured three cans of the insecticide. Symptoms reported included irritated skin, stinging eyes, and nausea. According to an official at the scene, fenitrothion works its way into the eyes, armpits, and up the nose. Because of the applications for which it is used, residential and dietary exposures to fenitrothion are considered to be negligible in the U.S. [Pg.387]

Lina Mehta obtained B.Sc., M.Sc., and Ph.D. degrees in India before moving to the Chemistry Department at Brunei University in 1989 as a postdoctoral research fellow. Her work has been centered mainly in synthetic organic chemistry associated with anticancer research in collaboration with Cancer Research UK, Gray Cancer Research Trust, and Royal Marsden Hospital in the UK, and with several other research institutes in the USA and Australia. The Chemistry Department at Brunei finally closed in 2000 and Dr. Mehta moved into the Centre for the Environment and subsequently into the Institute for the Environment at Brunei. Her main area of research at present is on the synthesis and application of ionic liquids to environmental problems. She has published numerous research papers in various journals and co-authored reviews on aspects of heterocyclic chemistry for several well-known series of books. [Pg.319]
