For several years, the French Atomic Energy Commission (CEA) has developed modelling tools for ultrasonic NDT configurations. Implemented within the CIVA software for multiple technique NDT data acquisition and processing [1,2], these models are not only devoted to laboratory uses but also dedicated to ultrasonic operators without special training in simulation techniques. This approach has led us to develop approximate models carrying out the compromise between as accurate as possible quantitative predictions and simplicity, speed and intensive use in an industrial context. [Pg.735]

Natural uranium consists almost entirely of the a emitters - U and As - U decays more than six times faster than (Fig. 31.1) the proportion of is very slowly but inexorably decreasing with time. Prior to 1972. all analyses of naturally occurring uranium had shown this proportion to be notably constant at 0.7202 O.OOObfr. France and studied history at the Sorbonne. During World War I, he was stationed in the Eiffel Tower as a radio engineer. Intrigued by his exposure to radio communications, he returned to school after the war, earned a Ph.D. in physics, and became a professor of theoretical physics at the Faculte des Sciences at the Sorbonne. He received the Nobel Prize in physics in 1929, five years after obtaining his degree, for his work that showed electrons to have properties of both particles and waves. Monomers with low molecular weights will diffuse into the wood more rapidly than polymers such as PEG. In a second phase, their in situ radiation curing will form wood consolidants that are much stronger than PEG. However, this method requires very heavy irradiation equipment, which is usually available only in nuclear research centers. The irradiation cell dimensions and the 7-source geometry limit the size of the artifacts. For mainly these reasons, the radiation process was applied in very few institutions and in most cases only at the experimental level.
