Until 1945 no anhydrides of xylitol or any other pentitol had been described. In that year a patent was granted to Grandel73 to make anhydrides of pentitols by heating them with a catalyst, followed by vacuum distillation. Xylitol on being heated with methionic acid followed by vacuum distillation gave monoanhydroxylitol and a dianhydro-(73) F. Grandel (to Alien Property Custodian), U. S. The initial selection of books was based on the list of chemical and other technical books reprinted for the Alien Property Custodian, under the license issued to Edwards Bros., Ann Arbor, Michigan, and listed in their Catalog 6. Eighty percent of these were already available at Crerar. The Library Committee prepared a list from the remaining twenty percent. Later, since the Alien Property Custodian s authorizations already represented a selective list, it was decided that all of the books in the remaining twenty percent should be purchased.
