Complete assessment of hazards should be made for all materials and suspected products associated with the experiment or procedure. Chapter 3 provides the basis for interpreting and applying much of the available hazard information. Both literature resources and knowledgeable contacts inside the local research community and in other institutions can provide additional information. If risks are determined to be unacceptable, experiments can be redesigned to minimize the volumes of chemicals used or to employ less hazardous alternatives that might do the job equally well. Some important considerations include volumes and flow rates to be employed, amounts required, physical properties of materials to be used, potential for exposure, regulatory concerns, and emergency response for unexpected events. [Pg.32]

Fourteen SMEs in China were contacted. The research involved the collection of primary data and required a considerable effort from the case companies, whilst companies were often very sensitive to data confidentiality and had limited human resources and relevant technologies to support data collection. Consequently, the choice was limited. However, two agreed to give their full support to the data collection. These companies are reasonably representative because their SCs include multiple functions and parties (e.g., many suppliers, manufacturing, private warehouse, transport companies, and many customers) in different markets. More importantly, the SC structure in the two case companies is similar in terms of information and material flows and their associated characteristics, for example, multiple uncertainties, although the scale of some uncertainties may be different. Additionally, these two manufacturers are located in the north and south of China, respectively, which represent alternative local economic and societal influences. The two companies are in different industries, and therefore, the investigation of their differences and similarities can contribute to the process of model generalisation. [Pg.74]

On the other hand, institutional features hindering inclusion were associated primarily with a perceived lack of communication and information within the organisation, as Figure 9.2 shows. Although the lack of conununication was primarily noted between staff within the host school, the boundaries of conununication difficulties were often blurred and extended to school-inclusion Project contacts also these are examined in detail in the section below. Buddings, staff attitudes and lack of resources arose conunoidy as impediments to the successful development of the Inclusion Project. These too, though, are complex issues and will be examined in detail in the relevant section below. [Pg.115]
