The sustainable management of sediments, in addition to water, soil and sludge environmental matrices, in relation to surfactant regulations, is also an important and relevant issue. The US EPA has recently shown concern regarding the levels of surfactants in sediments and has thus released a Draft Contaminated Sediment Science Plan. In this draft, recommendations for the development of analytical methods and evaluations of the toxicity and risk assessment of Emerging endocrine disrupters like APEOs and their metabolites in sediment samples are outlined. 

We had originally planned to formrrlate an improved system for chemical assessment and evalrration, by taking all dimensions of sustainability into account and with the avoidance of simply shifting the problems. However, we in the Sub-Chem project resolved to develop more appropriate forms of dealing with deficiencies in knowledge and better ways to put the precautionary principle into practice. 

An alternative is offered by advances in computers and software, which make it possible to address the essential training and operational requirements more conveniently and cost-effectively. In fact, such computer-related tools could also help formulate responses to unintended releases of conventional chemicals and hazardous materials. Thus, if developed, such computer-related tools could permit first-responders to enhance and sustain their ability to assess and plan for variety of different situations. 

With this Planning for the Future example set forth, this chapter will focus on describing the three competency-based outcomes categorized from the data presented in Chapter 2. Each competency, systems, sustainability and ethics, is defined based on recent theories, contextualized based on recent research, and finally synthesized based on assessment rubrics. This is done to address the above Statement of the Problem, Paradigms and pedagogy regarding the need for competency mastery in mechanical engineering education need to be created and/or enriched so that the DNA double helix model of content and competency development can be enacted widely. With that Statement of the Problem in mind, the first competency, systems competency, is presented next. 

Impacts on social well-being are aggregated based on 11 pathways, six of which are quantitative indicators. The five remaining indicators, which are qualitative information collected by consultation with an expert board, are skipped in this study because of hmited time. The quantitative indicators are analyzed at an economy-wide scale for the purpose of sustainability assessment. The economy-wide scale of9.46E + 07 MWh of electricity is selected in this study, as it is equal to about 500 MW of installed capacity of bioelectricity, which is planned to be developed by the Vietnamese government by 2020 [35]. 

The preparations for the extended shutdown period include the development of a written plan by the operating organization, reviewed and assessed by the regulatory body. The plan details the needs for sustaining the shutdown condition.
