Asafoetida, one of the most pungent of all spices, is obtained from the rhizomes and roots of the shrub Ferula assa-foetida (Apiaceae), native to the sonthwest Asian region. It is rich in an oleo-gum-resin made np of 6-17% volatile oils, 40-64% resin and 7-25% gum. The volatile oil contains disulfide compounds similar to those in garlic. The resin consists of farnesiferols—sesquiterpenoid coumarins— along with ferulic acid and asaresinatannols (Bradley 1992). [Pg.106]

The percentage of volatile oil in the tears of asafoetida may equal that in the mass variety, or even be slightly higher in good specimens, but in general it is slightly lower. [Pg.322]

An oil has also been distilled from the Brazilian cedrela wood (Cedrela brasUiensis), which yields about 0 5 per cent, of oil of a pale bluish colour, of specific gravity 0-9348 and optical rotation - 0 22. There is also a cedrela tree in Brazil, Cedrela Velloziaiia, which yields a small amount of essential oil having an odour recalling that of asafoetida, but whose characters have not been investigated. [Pg.494]
