Any of a group of five chemically related nonmetallic elements chlorine, bromine, fluorine, iodine, and astatine. Chlorine compounds are used as EP additives in certain lubricating oils, and as constituents of certain petrochemicals (e.g., vinyl chloride, chlorinated waxes).
