The ability to accurately determine the onset of oestrus in cattle is of great value in enabling artificial insemination to be carried out efficiently and therefore cost-effectively. One way to monitor the oestrus cycle is by measuring variation in progesterone production and in dairy cows this can be achieved by measuring progesterone levels in their milk. Oestrus onset is indicated by a rapid fall in the concentration of milk progesterone to below 2-5ng/mL [3].

The modem varieties have lost their natural ability to fly or forage for feed. Artificial insemination is routinely used with turkey breeders to avoid injury of the hens by the much larger toms and because the broad breasts have resulted in most males having a conformation that renders them incapable of natural mating.

The pheromone is commercially available as an aid in artificial insemination, to show when a young sow is in oestrus.

Couples with a multitude of infertility problems, including unidentified causes and persistent infertility despite standard treatments, may benefit from assisted reproductive techniques. Standard initial therapy consists of ovulation induction and artificial insemination for at least 6 months before progressing to more expensive and exotic techniques.

In view of the importance of artificial insemination in farming, it is somewhat surprising that so few studies of animal seminal fluid have been reported. However, there are studies on boar seminal plasma giving details of resonance assignments. - ...
