Laboratory management must provide for the continuous appraisal, training and development of individuals at all levels in the organizatioa Training and education is, in fact, part of the remuneration package for all level of employees in the laboratory, as well as for self-employed chemists. 

At present, the American Institute of Baking is inspecting some 150 to 200 bakeries per year. Such inspections involve painstaking appraisal of the conditions of infestation within the plants over a period of 3 or 4 days by an individual scientifically trained by years of experience in this work. During the year 1948 approximately 100 bakeries were so inspected. 

When appraising these techniques for freshness determination, there is clear evidence that sdAough many of the methods are accurate, they frequently require uncooked grossly spoiled products and trained personnel for valid results. Another inconvenience is the inability to perform these tests outside of a laboratory setting. Many of the analyses take 1-2 d to obtain results. The seafood industry would benefit from a method that was rapid, sensitive during early stages of spoilage, simple to perform, and useful with both raw and cooked products.

There are two methods for estimating fiber quality, expert appraisal by a trained classer, and instrumentation. Many different classification systems are used worldwide in the various countries where cotton is grown. For example, the United States [601], China [3,594,602], Uzbekistan [603], and Egypt [594] all have different systems. All systems measure cotton quality using similar parameters, even though the actual classification scheme and classification designations may be different. If you re running a simple Variable MSA in a lab setting, the procedure is fairly straightforward. Most importantly, ensure that all tests are done by appraisers who have been trained to correctly and consistently measure and document the process or product output. 

First of all, the supervisor to whom the new employee is assigned must be qualified by both interest and ability to instruct, and a successful, experienced junior employee must be available to assist. Secondly, the training assignment must embody all of the elements of a regular project, one which will make effective use of the highest level of the employee s training and experience. It must also offer an opportunity to achieve substantial accomplishment and to enable a clear-cut appraisal of performance. Finally, the assignment s schedule must be sufficiently flexible to allow 10 to 20% of the employee s time to be spent in other activities. 

The sponsor company will consider training an investment. It does not wish to train the individual to take a career step out of the company but must take the risk that this may occur. Appraisal will measure the adequacy of training for the role or for the future role of the appraisee. Whether an appraiser or an appraisee, the first training to be undertaken may well be a short course ensuring everyone uses the appraisal process in the same manner.
