Antonyms

Radiosensitivity—Relative susceptibility of cells, tissues, organs, organisms, or any living substance to the injurious action of radiation. Radiosensitivity and its antonym, radioresistance, are currently used in a comparative sense, rather than in an absolute one. 

One antonym for clear is cloudy. Another antonym for clear is colored. When you say you obtained a clear liquid, do you mean that it is not cloudy, or that it is colorless ... 

But if you re in a testing situation and you are not allowed to use one, rely on the context clues in the sentence. The term context clues means that other words in the sentence give away or give clues to the definition. For example, sometimes you will find synonyms (words that mean the same thing) or antonyms (words that mean the opposite), or details that lead you to identify the vocabulary word in question. Once in a while, you will find a group of words set off by commas (called an appositive), which gives you a very clear definition of the word.

The GRE Verbal test is a 30-minute section consisting of 30 questions. The four types of verbal questions are analogies, antonyms, sentence completions, and reading comprehension questions. 

The relationship of all antonyms is one of opposition. Basically, you must pick the answer choice (i.e., the word or concept) that is most nearly the opposite of the question word. Like the analogies section, this is also a test of vocabulary and reasoning skills. 

Antonyms are opposites. You are given a word and asked to pick the word most nearly opposite it from the answer choices.

Both the analogies and the antonym questions on the GRE ask you to make connections quickly and accurately. Even if you know the vocabulary, you may miss the question if you can t nail the connection. Get in the habit of making connections. 

If you have ever taken the SAT, you will be somewhat familiar with three of these four question types. (There are no antonym questions on the SAT.) Each type of question comes in varying levels of difficulty, starting with a question considered to be about average in difficulty. Once you answer the initial question, the computer will administer either a harder or an easier follow-up question and then continue to repeat that process with subsequent questions. 

You probably know that a synonym is a word or phrase that means the same as another word or phrase. An antonym is a word or phrase that means the opposite of another word or phrase. Think of the prefix anti, meaning against or not. 

There are seven to ten antonym questions on the GRE. The directions for those questions will read something like the following ... 

Antonyms test your understanding of vocabulary by using pairs of words with opposite meanings. Analogies test your understanding of the relationships between pairs of words. 

Contrasting/antonyms/opposites. Light dark is an example of a contrasting relationship. Fast is an antonym of slow. Previous is the opposite of subsequent. 

The logical relationship embedded in each antonym question is one of opposition. In each case, you are looking for the answer choice that is most nearly opposite the initial word. If you remember this simple principle and apply your vocabulary skills to decipher unfamiliar words, you will still do well on the antonym questions. 

An antihero is the opposite of a hero. An antibiotic is designed to inhibit or destroy life (bio = life). Antifreeze works against the tendency of liquids to freeze. The most important thing to keep in mind as you answer antonym questions is that you are looking for a word or phrase that stands most directly in opposition to the stem word.
