The oligomerization of cardanol with boron trifluoride etharate as the initiator was studied in detail by Antony et al. [171]. The reaction conditions were optimized by using gel permeation chromatography as 140°C with an initiator concentration of 1%. GPC data indicate conversion of all monoene, diene, and triene components into polymer except the saturated component, indicating participation of all the unsaturated components in polymerization. Antonie van Leeuwenhoek, a Dutch lens maker, devoted his life to studies with the microscope that he had constructed. In this work, he discovered, in about 1680, motile sperm in semen. He believed, because of their motility and presumably their shape, diat diey were animal parasites widiin die semen. Consequently, under this misapprehension, he called diem animals in semen, i.e. spermatozoa (anodier example of a name which, albeit incorrect, is still used).

Micro-organisms were discovered by Antonie van Leeuwenhoek in Delft (Holland) in 1676, but their role in causing infections, plagues, and epidemics was established only two centuries later, by Robert Koch through his work on anthrax. Koch, and his four postulates for ensuring that a suspected microbe actually caused a given disease made it possible for biologists to study infectious diseases experimentally for the first time. This set the scene for the discovery of chemotherapy, but it was slow to arrive as we shall see.
