Additives are present in a paint in small amounts (typically less than 5 wt %), but can have a marked effect on the paint properties. They include antifoam, antisettling, and antiskinning agents, can-corrosion inhibitors, driers, dispersion aids, and many more. Details of these can be found in many books (e.g. Lamboume and Strivens, 1999). 

The formation of skin is because of oxidation and polymerization of the medium at the air-liquid interface. Antiskinning agents, usually volatile antioxidants, are generally added to paint to prevent skinning. Antiskin agents minimize skin formation on the top of the can during use or storage. 

Butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) is an antioxidant for food, animal feed, petroleum products, synthetic rubbers, plastics, animal and vegetable oils, and soaps. It is also used as an antiskinning agent in paints and inks.

Methyl isobutyl ketone has become increasingly important as a chemical feedstock. The oxime is used as an antiskinning agent in oxidatively drying paints, and the peroxide is used to cure unsaturated polyester resins. Methyl isobutyl ketone is an intermediate in the preparation of imidazolones and acetal esters. It is also used to block amines (ketimines) that act as moisture-initiated latent epoxy resin hardeners. Finally, alkaline autocondensation at elevated temperature yields higher molecular mass products that are employed as fragrances and perfumes.
