Ethyl methyl ketoxime

The carbon-13 NMR spectrum of acetone oxime has three resonances, the deriva-tized carbonyl carbon at 154.5 ppm and the two nonequivalent CH3 groups at 21.5 and 14.7 ppm. The difference between the chemical shifts of the two methyl groups, 6.8 ppm, is primarily a steric compression shift. This is clearly indicated in the carbon NMR spectrum of methyl ethyl ketoximes (Scheme 1), where the two oxime substituents are not sterically identical and thus the two isomers are not present in equal amounts. Solvent applications account for almost 95 percent of all MEK consumption the rest goes to chemical uses such as MEK peroxide and methyl ethyl ketoxime. The solvent applications include surface coatings, adhesives, lube oil dewaxing, magnetic tape manufacture, and printing inks. Production of MEK in 1999 totaled almost 690 million lb.

The reaction is reversible, but the state of equilibrium highly favors the desired products. Preparations of large quantities for synthetic work are illustrated for methyl ethyl ketoxime, cyclohexanone oxime, hept-aldoxime, and benzophenone oxime, the procedures varying somewhat with the nature of the carbonyl compound. In some instances, a readily available and cheap reagent like sodium hydroxylamine disulfonate, HON(SO,Na)j, is first prepared from sodium nitrite and sodium bisulfite and, without isolation, treated with the carbonyl compound, Hydioxylamine-O sulfonic add, Ii,NOSO,H, is still another reagent and, like sodium hydroxylamine disulfonate, is used in the absence of a base. The minima in the exchange curves for nitroethane, nitromesitylene, or methyl ethyl ketoxime in methanol are all followed by a plateau at higher solute concentration. These compounds are reduced slowly under these conditions, and therefore one should not expect their adsorption to interfere with the rate of exchange. The form of the exchange curves are not so readily explained. 

The plateaus may be explained by sufficient adsorption of unreduced nitro compound or oxime at higher concentrations to displace the amine. In nitroethane and methyl ethyl ketoxime, the active hydrogen may exchange with deuterium. Nitroethane over Adams platinum catalyst in the absence of solvent, under conditions similar to these, showed 6 % exchange...
