Bacterial resistance to conventional antibiotics has become a serious problem in infection control, and has led to intensive research efforts to develop an effective novel antimicrobial agent. Antimicrobial peptides have already played a crucial role in pharmaceutical research as biomedically useful agents or as lead compounds for drug development. Nitrofurantoin is bacteriostatic and bactericidal for many gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. P aeruginosa and many strains of proteus are resistant, but in nitrofurantoin-susceptible populations resistant mutants are rare. Clinical drug resistance emerges slowly. There is no cross-resistance between nitrofurantoin and other antimicrobial agents.

The drugs used to treat TB include capreomycin, cycloserine, ethambutol, isoniazid, pyrazinamide, rifabutin, rifampicin and streptomycin. Resistance is most likely with long courses of treatment of antimicrobial agents and treatment courses are six (or even nine) months long.
