KLH Keyhole limpet haemocyanin, used for its excellent antigenic properties. It is used as a carrier protein in order to bestow immunogenicity in small haptens. [Pg.252]

The discovery of Lp(a) by Berg in 1962 (B6) relied on the production of rabbit antisera against beta-lipoprotein and on the selective absorption of these antisera with individual human sera. When certain human sera were used for absorption, the antisera retained precipitation capacity in radial immunodiffusion with 30-35% of individual human sera, which obviously contained a previous unknown antigen. The particle carrying the new antigen shared antigenic properties with beta-lipoprotein, but had an additional antigenic structure. This was evidenced from the only partial fusion of the precipitin bands formed between a positive human serum, the antibeta lipoprotein antiserum and the new absorbed antiserum. [Pg.105]

The use of biological materials as coatings for piezoelectric crystals was first demonstrated by Shons et al. [237], who immobilized bovine serum albumin (BSA) on a crystal precoated with a 30% solution of Nyebar C, a low-surface energy plastic. The rationale of using this solution as the coating material is that proteins adsorbed on low-energy surfaces retain their antigenic properties. Exposure of the BSA-coated crystal to a solution... [Pg.169]

In addition to this, virus-like particles have been generated that contain a form of HBsAg that has been modified at the N-terminus so that it can be utilized to present T- and B-cell epitopes. The fact that the VLPs remained intact suggests that this alteration did not negatively affect the antigenic properties of the protein and that a multivalent response could be made possible. [Pg.32]

Lipopolysaccharides are the dominant surface feature of the outer membrane of gram-negative bacteria such as Escherichia coli and Salmonella ty-phimurium. These molecules are prime targets of the antibodies produced by the vertebrate immune system in response to bacterial infection and are therefore important determinants of the serotype of bacterial strains (serotypes are strains that are distinguished on the basis of antigenic properties). The lipopolysaccharides of S. typhimurium contain six fatty acids bound to two... [Pg.260]

In immunoelectrophoresis two sequential procedures are applied to the analysis of complex protein mixtures (1) separation of the protein mixture by agarose gel electrophoresis, followed by (2) interaction with specific antibodies to examine the antigenic properties of the separated proteins. [Pg.132]
