Antibacterial and antifungal activity

New applications of dithioles and dithiolanes include evaluation of compounds such as 69 and 70 as flavour components <98MI177>, 71 for antimycotic activity <99MIP33826>, 72 for antiviral activity <99CC1245>, 73 for antifungal and antibacterial activity <99MI6> and use of 74 in prevention and heatment of asthma complications <99EUP909758>. 

It has broad spectrum antifungal and antibacterial activity and is effective against Cryptococcus, Blastomyces, dermatophytes, Microsporum, Coccidioides and Candida. Used topically as ointment, lotion, gel, ear drop and vaginal gel. Adverse effects include fever, chills, allergic reaction and even anaphylaxis. 

In the reaction of a simple ketone enolate with a chiral aldehyde, the use of a zinc enolate may offer advantages in terms of facial selectivity with respect to the use of a lithium enolate. This is exactly the result recorded in the condensation of the kinetic enolate of 2-undecanone 140 with 141, the key step in a total synthesis of (-l-)-preussin 142, a fermentation product with antifungal and antibacterial activity (equation 77)169. While 2-undecanone Li enolate did not display stereocontrol when added to 141, an acceptable syn diastereoselectivity was displayed by the Zn enolate 140. 

Antifungal and antibacterial activity have also been reported for bile acid dimers linked through 1,2,3-triazole and bis-p-lactaiu [336].

Dichlorophen is an antihelminthic drug that was used in the treatment of tapeworm infections but has been superseded by praziquantel and niclosamide. It also has antifungal and antibacterial activity and has been used topically in the treatment of fungal infections and as a germicide in soaps and cosmetics (1). 

Examples of other antimicrobial triterpenoids from the Anthemideae tribe also included two new pentacyclic triterpenoids from Aster ageratoides Turcz. var. pilosus Willd [213] and P-sitosterol from Senecio lyratus Michaux with in vitro antifungal and antibacterial activities [214]. 

Dequadin dequalinium chloride, dequalinium chloride [ban. inn] (natrallnlum chloride Dequadin Labosept ) is a bisquaternary quinolinium ANTISEPTIC, with some ANTIFUNGAL and ANTIBACTERIAL activity. Clinically, it may be used topically, commonly as throat lozenges. 

Isothiazole and its derivatives have a broad range of biological activities (81PMC117, 97JPR1, 03PHMD617). Especially, isothiazol-3(2//)-ones 1 are potent industrial microbiocides because of their antifungal and antibacterial activities (02SUR79).
