Antifogging additives

Antifogging additives are added to food packaging film used for meat and vegetables, particularly on display in the supermarket (400). 

Antifogging additives function by increasing the critical surface tension of the polymer surface, allowing the molecules of water to wet the surface, forming a continuous layer of water that does not scatter fight and therefore does not interfere with transparency. 

A new generation antifog additive has been introduced recently to control the formation of water droplets in food packaging of biaxially oriented PP (BOPP) and cast PP, which offers control of droplet formation in packaging for pre-cut salads and other fresh produce, as well as in hot food packaged before it cools down, such as fresh bread and meat cooked in a store.

Antifogging additives are typically surface-active product. They have a hydrophilic head and a lipophilic tail (such as sorbitan. 

The primary use of Pationic 1530 is an antifog additive for flexible PVC or polyolefin film. It can be used alone or in combination with other surfactants. In addition, Pationic 1530 can be used as a PVC lubricant, a polyolefin mold release, or an antistat in a variety of polymers. 

Condensation of water molecules on the iimer surface is often a problem for packages containing high moisture commodities. In those situations, antifogging compounds can be coated on the surface of the material or incorporated in the material during manufacture. Glycerol, sorbitol stearate, fatly alcohols, and ethyloxylates of nor l-phenols are used as antifogging additives. 

To overcome these problems, polymer films are modified with antifogging additives. The modified plastic films do not prevent the formation of condensation per se. However, while water vapor condenses on such films, antifogging additives migrate to the surface of the film, causing the condensation to spread evenly over the film s surface and run off instead of forming droplets (2, pp. 609-626). 

Representative antifogging additives are glycerol monooleate, poly-(glycerol ester)s, sorbitan esters, ethoxylated sorbitan esters, nonyl-phenol ethoxylate or ethoxylated alcohols (5). 

Antifogging additives can be incorporated within the polymer matrix as pure additives or as masterbatches or concentrates. Typical antifogging additive concentrations range between 1 and 3%. Antifogging additives can also be applied to the surface by coating. Surfactant molecules coatings have the undesirable property of forming a weak attachment to polymeric films or foils, particularly poly(ethylene) fibns and are washed away by the action of heat and humidity.
