The gradual reduction and ultimate elimination of lead has seen considerable effort by the refiner to maintain the octane numbers at satisfactory levels. In Europe, the conventional unleaded motor fuel, Eurosuper, should have a minimum RON of 95 and a minimum MON of 85. These values were set in 1983 as the result of a technical-economic study called RUFIT (Rational Utilization of Fuels in Private Transport). A compromise was then possible between refining energy expenses and vehicle fuel consumption (Anon., 1983). [Pg.210]

Since adipic acid has been produced in commercial quantities for almost 50 years, it is not surprising that many variations and improvements have been made to the basic cyclohexane process. In general, however, the commercially important processes stiU employ two major reaction stages. The first reaction stage is the production of the intermediates cyclohexanone [108-94-1] and cyclohexanol [108-93-0], usuaHy abbreviated as KA, KA oil, ol-one, or anone-anol. The KA (ketone, alcohol), after separation from unreacted cyclohexane (which is recycled) and reaction by-products, is then converted to adipic acid by oxidation with nitric acid. An important alternative to this use of KA is its use as an intermediate in the manufacture of caprolactam, the monomer for production of nylon-6 [25038-54-4]. The latter use of KA predominates by a substantial margin on a worldwide basis, but not in the United States. [Pg.240]

In a letter of unspecified date to a biologist, Linus Pauling is reported as writing (Anon 1998) "You refer to me as a biochemist, which is hardly correct. I can properly be called a chemist, or a phy.sical chemist, or a physicist, or an X-ray crystallographer, or a mineralogist, or a molecular biologist, but not, I think, a biochemist,"... [Pg.72]

The study of microstructures in relation to important properties of metals and alloys, especially mechanical properties, continues apaee. A good overview of eurrent concerns can be found in a multiauthor volume published in Germany (Anon. 1981), and many chapters in my own book on physieal metallurgy (Cahn 1965) are devoted to the same issues. [Pg.91]

The stereoselectivity of organometallic additions with carbonyl compounds fits into the general pattern for nucleophilic attack discussed in Chapter 3. With 4-r-butylcyclohex-anone, there is a preference for equatorial approach but the selectivity is low. Enhanced steric factors promote stereoselective addition. [Pg.466]

Ketones such as 2,2,5,5-tetraphenylcyclopentanone and 2,2,6,6-tetraphenylcyclohex-anone decarbonylate rapidly because of the stabilization afforded by the phenyl groups. The products result from recombination, disproportionation, or fragmentation of the diradical intermediate. ... [Pg.757]

A polyfluorinated P,y-unsaturated ketone is formed m situ from tributylamine and 3,4-bis(tnfluoromethyl)-3-(pentafluoroethyl)-5,5,6,6,6-pentafluoro-2-hex-anone. The enol form of the unsaturated ketone cyclizes via an intermolecular addition-elimination reaction that involves exclusive attack by oxygen rather than by carbon. This reaction demonstrates the hardness of a F-C= site toward... [Pg.731]
