Another way to include collaterals is to offer treatment services to them as well. Many treatment facilities offer such services, which may include family support groups or even individual therapy for family members of clients. Some treatment centers include family therapists specifically for these purposes. Sometimes counselors and therapists will refer family members to outside support groups, which may include Al-Anon or Alateen 12-step programs for family and friends. Family therapy may include assessment, sometimes using similar measures discussed earlier for assessing client needs, in order to more adequately help family members with their needs. In some cases, these assessments may be used to develop a family treatment plan or an individualized treatment plan for a family member.

Little has been written in the CAT literature about either the development of service infrastructure or the establishment of mutual self-help groups, although there is a wealth of literature which considers the role of Alcoholics Anonymous and Al-Anon which is of relevance here.38 As with service co-ordination, however, service development is not a task which the community team can undertake in isolation. The support received from service managers and planners is crucial in determining the extent to which such a role can be operationalised.

Al-Anon is a national support organization for family members of alcoholics, and Alateen performs the same function for children of alcoholics. The organization is derived from Alcoholic Anonymous and adapts the 12 steps and other AA traditions to help persons intimately affected by others abuse of alcohol. There are more than 24,000 Al-Anon and 2,300 Alateen groups in 115 countries worldwide. 

Alateen is a world-wide organization for the teens who are the relatives and friends of a problem drinker. Alateen is based on the twelve steps of Alcoholics Anonymous (Al-Anon). Each Alateen group is sponsored by an active, adult member of Al-Anon. Participation is voluntary, confidential, and free of charge. Information regarding Alateen meetings is available from each local Al-Anon Chapter.

This is not to say that parental codependency causes chemical dependence in the child. It only supports continuation of the substance problem. In most cases, however, unless and until parents extricate themselves from their enabling ways, by seeking recovery in counseling, treatment, or self-help groups like Al-Anon (see Key 31), it is very difficult for the child to let go of the chemical involvement that is ruling his or her life.

Al-Anon, a twelve-step recovery program originally for spouses of alcoholics, provides a forum where parents, and other family members, can get necessary support and understanding to cope with their sub stance-addicted child or sibling, and to free themselves from four fateful errors. 

Trying to control the addiction acting like one has the power to stop another person s use (regularly throwing out cigarettes that are found to keep the child nicotine-free, for example). In Al-Anon, they learn the importance of letting go what they can t control.
