My colleagues and I obtained some of these hidden data by using the Freedom of Information Act in the US. We analysed the data and submitted the results for peer review to medical and psychological journals, where they were then published.5 Our analyses have become the focus of a national and international debate, in which many doctors have changed their prescribing habits and others have reacted with anger and incredulity. My intention in this book is to present the data in a plain and straightforward way, so that you will be able to decide for yourself whether my conclusions about antidepressants are justified. [Pg.5]

I had a lot of anger work to do, and did a lot of it by writing in a journal. I became aware that some of my thoughts and feelings were toxic to me, too. For example, if I believe that I am selfish— which is a toxic thought—I ll create guilt about it, and guilt is a toxic reaction. [Pg.191]

ADHD may continue into adulthood. This issue has been debated not only in medical journals but on TV talk shows and in news magazines as well. However, adult ADHD is no trivial matter. Certainly, the physical hyperactivity of the 6 year old with ADHD is not so readily evident in the 26 or 36 year old. Nevertheless, some individuals with ADHD continue to be plagued by impulsive outbursts of anger and poor concentration even after they reach adulthood. This continues to take a toll as it often leads to marital strife and problems holding a job. Like the child and adolescent with ADHD, adults with the disorder are often considered underachievers and may even be dismissed as lazy. [Pg.236]

Methyl isocyanate (MIC) is the smallest member of the isocyanate family and the most reactive and toxic of all. MIC was almost unheard of until the fateful night December 3, 1984, when nearly 30 metric tons of this poisonous chemical spewed out of the Union Carbide India Ltd (UCIL) pesticide plant within a period of 45-60 min (Jayaraman, 1984). Bhopal turned into a city of death , wrote the fortnightly India Today (December 30, 1984). The journal Nature (Opinion, 1984) vented its anger thus ... the anguish vividly carried round the world by the television cameras seems not to have matured into the anger, even hysteria, there would have been had the [Bhopal] accident occurred on the edge of a European city - or in Connecticut (the headquarters of Union Carbide was in Danbury, Connecticut, USA). [Pg.293]

Soon after the accident, the highly respected journal Nature (Anonymous, 1984b) commented, The angui.sh vividly carried round the world by the television cameras seems not to have matured into anger, even hysteria, there would have been had the accident occurred on the edge of a European city — or in Connecticut [headquarters of Union Carbide]. Could this be the reason why the concern of the scientific community in the developed countries was short-lived It is safe to say that the full dimension of the toxicity of a chemical (and also its therapeutic potential) cannot be predicted from it.s chemical structure but can be approximated by careful and painstaking. studies. Such an enquiry into MIC would be well deserved not because it will disclose an astounding... [Pg.84]

In 1951, Hal Anger read in the journal. Nucleonics, of the invention of the rectilinear scanner by Benedict Cassen at UCLA. He thought I can do better than that. He recognized that the mechanical movement of the crystal radiation detector over the patient s body as designed in the Cassen rectilinear scanner was a serious limitation, and set out to develop a gamma ray camera. [Pg.81]

Finally, let us mention that the general definition of the inverse problem given here is in accordance with that used in reaction kinetics (Emanuel Knorre, 1975, p. 154 Jacquez, 1972, pp. 1, 132, 152, 187, 211 Toth Erdi, 1978, pp. 303-7 Yablonskii Bykov, 1977) and that used in other sciences and mathematics (Anger, 1979, p. 107 Keller, 1976 Peil, 1979 Sverdlove, 1977 Anikonov, 1978). The importance of the notion is reflected in the fact that a new journal entitled Inverse Problems has been started in 1985. [Pg.64]
