Nature Journal

A journal is a book in which you write your secret thoughts, record all your fun adventures, and draw pictures of things you see. A journal can also be used to record, or set down in writing, things you ve learned or discovered. John James Audubon used a journal to record notes and draw pictures of the birds of North America. Wilderness explorers Meriwether Lewis (1774-1809) and William Clark (1770-1838) used journals to record what they saw on their journeys out west in 1804-1806. Many things we ve learned about history and our natural world come from historical journals. Maybe someday the Nature Journal you make will become an important piece of natural history

Julius Sterling Morton (1832-1902) knew how important trees were to protect farms from storms and blizzards, and for providing food and shelter to all living creatures. In 1872 Mr. Morton created Arbor Day to educate people about the important role trees play in our lives. Arbor is a Latin word for tree. In April each state decides what day it will declare Arbor Day—a day for planting and taking care of trees To find out when Arbor Day is celebrated in your state, go to www.arbor-day.net. 

Fold each sheet of paper in half, lengthwise. Cut each sheet of paper in half cdong this fold line so that the paper size is roughly 8V2 x 5 inches. These pieces of paper will be the inside of your journal. Your cutting doesn t have to be exact or neat. In fact, the rougher the edges, the more artistic your joumcd will look. 

Cut the two pieces of cardboard down to roughly the same size as your paper. These will be the front and back covers of your journcd, so maike sure they are big enough to cover the pages.

Chinaberry and bittersweet are two plants that produce beautiful, brightly colored berries that are often used for decorating. Some parts of these plants are used in medicines, candles, paints, or soaps, but their berries are poisonous and can be very harmful if eaten. Use your nature journal or a notebook to draw pictures of the plants you find on your nature walks. Before you begin, you may want to look at the following books to help you better understand the world of plants ... 

Now that you have built your very own bird-house and birdbath, you can become a bird watcher. Pick a spot where you can sit and watch your birdhouse or birdbath. Be very quiet so that you do not scare the birds away. A pair of binoculars will help you to see the birds more closely. This activity will make a great science project, so don t forget to get out your nature Journal and write down what you observe.
