And the Future

A second series of additives comprises those that improve the octane number (see Chapter 5). We will examine in succession the role played by these additives, substances currently used, and the future prospects concerning additives in this area. [Pg.349]

The next day the Times ot London carried an article headlined Revolution in Science/New Theory of the Universe/Newtonian Ideas Overthrown. Einstein had triumphed over Newton (who, of course, remains a stellar figure in science). The drama of that moment was enhanced by the contrast with the recently concluded World War I, which had caused millions to die, empires to fall, and the future to be uncertain. At that time Einstein emerges, bringing newlaw and order. From that time on the world press made him into an icon, the divine man, of the twentieth centui y. [Pg.384]

A second German effort, designated HSST, has been undeiway since 1974. This is a lower speed EMS design and uses a LIM with power transfer via sliding contacts. This system has been demonstrated on several occasions and there are pending plans for implementation, but past plans have never been carried out and the future is uncertain. [Pg.739]

An example of the way in which process competition works in the manufacture of plastics is the story of acrylonitrile. The first process for the production of this plastic was based upon the reaction between hydrogen cyanide and acetylene, both hard to handle, poisonous, and explosive chemicals. The raw material costs were relatively low as compared to materials for other monomers, but the plant investment and manufacturing costs were too high. As a result, originally acrylonitrile monomer (1950s) sold for about 30 cents per pound and the future of the material looked dim as other plastics such as polyethylene became available at much lower prices due to their lower production costs. [Pg.578]

Consequently, I was especially receptive to the invitation from the Editors of Advances in Organometallic Chemistry to write an historical review of our researches involving boranes in organic chemistry. Perhaps we will witness a renewed effort to acquaint the student with the historical background so that he can face the problems of the present and the future with a greater confidence based upon some knowledge of how these problems were faced and often overcome by earlier workers. [Pg.2]

Mineral resources are broadly divided into discovered and the undiscovered categories. Features such as size, quality, characteristics and exact location of individual resources are matters of almost pure speculation for the latter. Undiscovered resources are unlikely to contribute much to the total supply in the immediate future. In the case of discovered resources estimates can be made, with an indication of the degree of reliability, of the timing and the future rates of production on a deposit-by-deposit basis. Using such estimation the occurrence and the likely rate of future availability can be combined in plots such as those shown in Figure 1.18 for discovered resources. Three situations are depicted. The first corresponds to future supply from sources that are reliable, the second to likely sources... [Pg.61]

The discovery of the base-paired, double-helical structure of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) provides the theoretic framework for determining how the information coded into DNA sequences is replicated and how these sequences direct the synthesis of ribonucleic acid (RNA) and proteins. Already clinical medicine has taken advantage of many of these discoveries, and the future promises much more. For example, the biochemistry of the nucleic acids is central to an understanding of virus-induced diseases, the immune re-sponse, the mechanism of action of drugs and antibiotics, and the spectrum of inherited diseases. [Pg.215]

Only against this background can we turn to living cells to examine them as systems. We shall presume that the steps in understanding any chemical system, living or dead, have to be the same, and with the above history of chemistry behind us and the future of biology in front of us, we can state them clearly as follows ... [Pg.19]
