Product specification documents and analytical test methods—In preclinical development, these are important documents and they evolve along with the development phases. Drug substances and products for clinical trials are tested based on these documents, and so are the stability samples. It is critical to ensure that the analyst will perform the right tests against the right specifications with the correct version of the test method. Therefore a mechanism must be in place to control these documents. This can be done manually or with TIMS. A manually controlled system would require the analyst to sign out hard copies of the documents from a central location. The Student s (W.S. Gossett) /-lest is useful for comparisons of the means and standard deviations of different analytical test methods. Descriptions of the theory and use of this statistic are readily available in standard statistical texts including those in the references [1-6]. Use of this test will indicate whether the differences between a set of measurement and the true (known) value for those measurements is statistically meaningful. For Table 36-1 a comparison of METHOD B test results for each of the locations is compared to the known spiked analyte value for each sample. This statistical test indicates that METHOD B results are lower than the known analyte values for Sample No. 5 (Lab 1 and Lab 2), and Sample No. 6 (Lab 1). METHOD B reported value is higher for Sample No. 6 (Lab 2). Average results for this test indicate that METHOD B may result in analytical values trending lower than actual values.

Most investigations involving petrolenm hydrocarbons are regulated by various agencies that may require methodologies, action levels, and cleanup criteria that are different. Indeed, the complex chemical composition of petroleum and petroleum products can make it extremely difficult to select the most appropriate analytical test methods for evaluating environmental samples and to interpret and use the data accurately.

Samples of the internal surfaces are taken by moistening the swab with a suitable solvent, sampling a 2.5-cm2 area, and then placing the swab in a test tube containing 10 ml of the solvent (specified for each active material from the analytical test method available in the laboratory or from pharmacoepia). 

Special Analytical Test Methods. Test methods which on the one hand resemble certain physicochemical methods, but on the other hand already give some indication of application properties are summarized as special analytical test methods in Table 29. They can be carried out within a short time and are used for characterization as well as production control. Since the results are influenced by the test conditions, these test methods are standardized. 

Application Tests. Physicochemical and special analytical test methods allow the classification of carbon blacks and a rough estimation of their application properties. Exact data on the application properties of a carbon black in a special system, e.g., plastic material or a rubber mixture, can only be given by application tests under nearly practical conditions.
