AMMIS

Ammi visnaga is a plant of the Umbelliferae family, which has been known and used for its therapeutic properties by the peoples of the Mediterranean basin since time immemorial. [Pg.1588]

One should not lightly dismiss the importance of serendipity in the history of drug discovery. In this context, the tale of the antiallergy drug Intal is particularly interesting [1], The toothpick plant (Ammi visnaga) originates in the... [Pg.121]

Initial observations on khellin (32), a furochromone-type compound from Ammi visnaga L., showed a mast-cell stabilizing effect. This led to the synthesis of many derivatives of this lead for the potential treatment of allergy and asthma, most notably the approved preventive antiasthma drug, cromolyn sodium (33). The precise molecular mechanism of this class of drugs is not yet clearly imderstood. ... [Pg.26]

Enzyme characteristics have been examined for recombinant C4H proteins from several species, including those from P. crispum, P. vulgaris, Ammi majus, H. tuberosus, and Ruta graveolens Similar values toward cinnamate (2 to 10p,A/) are reported, and consistently high substrate specificity (although the values vary between studies). Only 4-coumarate is found as the in vitro product, with no detectable 2- or 3-coumarate production. ... [Pg.152]

Potassium Trichloro-ammino-platinite, [Pt(NH3)Cl3]K.H20, is obtained by the interaction of potassium cliloroplatinite and tetra-ammi no -pi atinous chloride.3 It crystallises in orange-yellow orthorhombic prisms, is easily soluble in water and insoluble in alcohol. [Pg.233]

Some ammi no-platinum compounds have been described containing turn platinum atoms in the molecule. These should belong to tire same class of derivatives as the polynuclear cobalt-ammincs and cliromi-animines, but so far they have not been fully investigated. [Pg.241]

The furanochromone khellin (43) from the seeds of Ammi visnaga is a coronary vasodilator, and it has long been used in Egypt as a spasmolytic to relieve renal colic and ureteral spasms due to schistosomiasis. The corresponding dihydroxy compound is also a vasodilator, but other related compounds are inactive (5lCRV(48)543). [Pg.151]

Disodium cromoglycate (724), marketed as Intal or Cromolyn Sodium, bears some structural resemblance to khellin (457), the spasmolytic component of seeds of Ammi visnaga. Intal is one of the more successful drugs for the prevention of asthmatic attacks, though it is not effective in the treatment of an acute attack of asthma. It appears to prevent the release of histamine and other substances which mediate hypersensitivity reactions but is ineffective once these substances have been released. The chemistry and pharmacology of Intal have been reviewed (B-70MI22402). [Pg.882]

A few members contain alkaloids and several of these have been characterized. Only a few of the species which gave positive tests in this study were known to be alkaloidal from previous studies Ammi... [Pg.213]

The dried ripe fruits of Ammi visnaga (Umbelliferae/Apiaceae) have a long history of use in the Middle East as an antispasmodic and for the treatment of angina pectoris. The drug contains small amounts of coumarin derivatives, e.g. visnadin (Figure 3.40) (compare Ammi majus, a rich source of furocoumarins, page 146), but the major constituents (2-4%) are... [Pg.75]

Methoxsalen (xanthotoxin 8-methoxypsoralen) (Figure 4.36), a constituent of the fruits of Ammi majus (Umbelliferae/Apiaceae), is used medically to facilitate skin repigmentation where severe blemishes exist (vitiligo). An oral dose of methoxsalen is followed by long wave UV irradiation, though such treatments must be very carefully regulated to... [Pg.146]
