Amino resins, paint coatings

Both aqueous polymer-based systems (latex), made by emulsion or dispersion polymerization, and oil-modified alkyd resin-based systems are still in wide use [781], Table 12.2 shows the composition of a typical water-based emulsion paint. There is a wide variety of coatings, ranging from broad applicability to highly specialized, including latexes, amino resins, isocyanates, epoxy resins, acrylic resins, polyester... [Pg.295]

In the manufacture of amino resins every effort is made to recover and recycle the raw materials. However, there may be some loss of formaldehyde, methanol, or other solvent as tanks and reactors are vented. Some formaldehyde, solvents, and alcohols are also evolved in the curing of paint films and the curing of adhesives and resins appUed to textiles and paper. The amounts of material evolved in curing the resins may be small so that it may be difficult to justify the installation of complex recovery equipment. However, in the development of new resins for coatings and for treating textiles and paper, emphasis is being placed on those compositions that evolve a niinimum of by-products on curing. [Pg.325]

Surfacers are mainly produced from low molecular mass polyester resins cross-linked with amino resins. Blocked polyisocyanate resins may also be used for high stone chip resistance. Water-soluble polyester resins are increasingly used for water-thinnable stoving surfacers. Spray and dip paints based on polyester resins are used to coat automobile accessories (e.g., windscreen wipers, axle parts). [Pg.55]

The variability in the pyrolysis profiles of the different classes of coatings is self-evident. The interpretation of the composition revealed is as follows The acrylic lacquer (General Motors) is a methyl methacrylate/methacrylic acid copolymer plasticized with dibutyl-, butyl cyclohexyl-, and butyl benzyl phthalates. The acrylic enamel (Ford) is a styrene/ethylhexyl acrylale/methyl methacrylate terpolymer. The alkyd enamel (Honda) pyrolysis profile indicates that the paint resin is an orthoph-thaUc alkyd containing a butylated-amino resin cross-linking component. [Pg.178]

Amino resin has benefited from the fast-growing paints and coatings industry, which will continue to offer the best growth opportunity. Monsanto and Shanghai Coatings Co have set up a joint venture in Shanghai to manufacture amino resins in China. [Pg.22]

In the case of water-borne coatings, the film properties have also been shown to depend on the nature of the alkylating alcohol. For example, ethanol etherified amino resins have been shown to exhibit high hardness and poor film appearance compared to HMM resins. This has been attributed to the poor compatibility of such resins with alkyd resins. Mechanical properties of paint films based on HMM resin vary depending on whether the paint system is water-borne or solvent-based." This difference has been assigned to the different network structures due to the blocking of... [Pg.929]
